Our next Cabinet Conversation, scheduled for TODAY, February 16 from 10–10:45 a.m., is with Margaret Leinen, Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Dean of the Graduate School of Marine Sciences. Leinen is an award-winning oceanographer and distinguished national and international leader in ocean science, global climate and environmental issues. Her research in paleo-oceanography and paleo-climatology focuses on ocean sediments and their relationship to global biogeochemical cycles and the history of Earth’s ocean and climate. First Annual Health Sciences Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Community Fair

In the Absence of Things is an experimental short film written and performed by renowned jazz-vocalist Somi in partnership with the National Black Theatre and Salon Africana. Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, the work is a lyrical meditation on the profound sense of personal vacancy that a performer feels when unable to perform in front of an audience. These emotions are captured on screen with vocals from Somi’s Grammy-award winning album Holy Room—Live at Alte Oper with Frankfurt Radio Big Band, along with her own spoken narrative and visuals.

Somi reflects on her personal connection with South African singer-songwriter and activist Miriam Makeba, the first African to win a Grammy and to enjoy a global music career. Somi shares selected readings from her play “Dreaming Zenzile”, which aims to honor Makeba’s memory and to continue “undoing the silence surrounding her legacy”. The event will be accompanied with music from “Dreaming Zenzile” as well as selections from her forthcoming studio album. Remembering Mama Africa will be followed by a live Q&A.

The committee has worked to create programming that supports staff in both their personal and professional growth.
