LUNCH WITH AN ALUM, MONDAY OCTOBER 23

Ben Miller is a funny, engaging, and multi talented young man! On Monday he’ll be joining us via Skype from New York City to talk about his path since graduating from The Academy in 2013. You won’t want to miss this! In Ben’s own words:
“After graduating from The Academy I  immediately ran to get a bachelor of music in Sound Recording Technology from UMass Lowell, where I sang opera, was a bus driver, DJ, tour guide, studio supervisor, semi-professional soccer player, Chief Engineer of the student-run radio station, 91.5 FM WUML, Lowell; and did not minor in English. I moved to New York City in May to intern at an extremely prestigious recording studio that you probably haven't heard of, and spent a pleasant internship in de facto servitude, cleaning toilets and fetching coffee for pop stars. Four months later, the toilets were clean, and I went freelance: working as an assistant for two incredibly talented Grammy-winning engineers as well as doing the oddest of jobs in catering, personal soccer coaching, dinner theater and more to support my continued existence until I can make music all the time. I regularly cite The Academy at Charlemont as the place where he learned to be such an intelligent and kind young man, and I look forward to a large and enthusiastic turnout for this alumni luncheon. Attendance is mandatory.”
Attendance really isn’t mandatory, but let’s have a good turnout for Ben! Bring your lunch, and your questions, to Polyhymnia during the lunch period from 11:25 to 12:00 on Monday, October 23.

UPDATE: 7th and 8th Grade Parent Roundtable Discussions at GCC with Aethena Enzer-Mahler, LICSW

RESCHEDULED for OCTOBER 24, 7 - 8:30 PM

Please note that the opportunity for 7th & 8th grade parents to meet with The Academy's psychological consultant and school counselor, Aethena Enzer-Mahler, originally scheduled for last Tuesday, will now take place this coming Tuesday (10/24). Aethena will cover important points about the developmental stages of students in the grade levels indicated, as well as address any questions or concerns that parents might have. This evening is sure to provide great food for thought, whether or not you have concerns about your child's mental health or emotional well-being. The discussion will be held in the The MacLeish Conference Room (Room C307) near the library on the 3rd floor of GCC's main building at 1 College Drive in Greenfield, MA. Please contact Nora Bates Zale with questions or concerns.

The Cupcake Challenge - October 27

The Challenge: take a blank canvas (a plain cupcake) and create a masterpiece. Each team will be given plain cupcakes and a bag of mystery decorations. It’s up to you to create something special.
Cupcakes will be judged (and eaten) at the Halloween Dance. The winning team will be announced at Morning Meeting on Monday.
Teams participating in the Cupcake Challenge will stay at school until the dance begins. They will plan and decorate their cupcakes, then watch the movie Beetlejuice. Bring your costumes for the dance and something for dinner. Only those registered may stay through for the Cupcake Challenge and the movie. Contact Steph Powers for more information.

CONFERENCE SIGN-UP (for Fall Conferences, November 2 and 3)

The Academy strives to give students opportunities to reflect on their learning and progress in school. While they are supported by a team of peers and adults, it is ultimately the students that are responsible for setting goals for themselves, tracking their progress, and gathering and responding to feedback. Twice a year, at the end of the first and third quarter, students are responsible for reflecting on their learning and progress toward their goals through facilitating conferences in each discipline that include their parents or guardians, and teacher. These conferences will put students in a leadership role, rather than in a typical conference role of bystander, as they lead the discussion about their successes and areas for growth while responding to questions and feedback from the adult participants in the conversation.

We ask everyone to please sign up for a conference slot. The registration deadline has passed but we'll fit you in as we are able. We will then create a schedule for when you are here so that you have 15-minute sessions with each individual teacher during your conference period. We will do our best to stick to the agreed-upon schedule, but unforeseen circumstances sometimes require that people must remain a few minutes after their scheduled end time in order to meet.

Thank you. We look forward to seeing you all in person. Please remember that there is no school for students on that Thursday afternoon or on Friday.

BLOOD DRIVE THANKS

Many thanks to all who gave blood, solicited blood donors, and provided baked goods for last Friday's Blood Drive. Though the 27 pints collected is a smaller figure than we'd hoped for, the team from the American Red Cross told us it was more than they'd collected at other recent high school drives. We're on again for this in April, so please stay tuned for springtime requests!

Sports Recap:

Week of October 16, 2017

Please note that the details of the schedule of varsity soccer games for the week of October 23rd will be emailed to soccer parents by October 20th, once the RVAL regular season is complete. Thank you for your patience.
On Monday, the Boys' JV Soccer team tied Pinecobble School 6-6 in a hard fought-game. The Aardvark squad came back from one-point deficits on four separate occasions and actually took the lead for a short period of time. Raymond M had three goals, Charlie P scored twice, and Alec D added one more. Nacho TP and Alex T each played half of the game in goal, making five and six saves respectively. Nick C played extremely well on defense, as did Sam R. Chanina K also had a strong game. The Academy boys had an impressive 21 shots on goal.
The Girls' Soccer team defeated Springfield Commonwealth Academy 8-1 on Tuesday behind strong games from Elaina G-B (two goals) and Izzy B (one goal). Esmé M-R, Eliza B, Nellie B-O, and Greta M. also scored.
On Wednesday, the middle school soccer players mixed teams with a depleted Hartsbrook middle school team. Special thanks to all the players involved for being willing to play on any team in order make the game more competitive. Attticus R and Nick F scored goals, while Gwen H had a solid afternoon in goal. The two teams, both likely with full rosters, will play again next week at Hartsbrook.
On Wednesday, the Boys' Varsity defeated Paulo Friere Social Justice Charter School 3-0. Hendrik P (2) and Kyle N scored goals for the Aardvarks in the team's final regular season game.
The Cross-Country team raced at Eagle Hill on Wednesday. Kyle M finished 14th out of 46. He was followed by Patrick O (19th), Eli C (37th), and Izzy S (38th).
On Monday, November 6, we will be celebrating the end of The Academy's fall sports season. Feel free to join us from 2:15 PM to 3:00 PM in the Sumner Recital Hall.

APC 2nd Annual Family Hike

It was a beautiful day for the 2nd annual APC fall family hike. The top of Spruce Hill in Savoy State Forest gave us a spectacular view of peak fall foliage.
