Activism Works!
As you recall in our recent newsletter, we reported on a persistent problem on McComas Av near Bentley Ln, where drainage problems were causing water to bubble up and run down the sidewalk constantly, leaving it wet and slippery and often muddy or icy depending on the season. There had already been several nasty falls and a lot of close calls. The close neighbors brought it to the attention of the County and of KHCA and we weighed in with the County, asking them to try to make this a priority. We were able to report then that the County had looked at the problem and was designing a solution but weren't sure when they could actually schedule time for a work crew to get out there and do what would be a fairly major job.
The good news is that the time is NOW! Earlier this week, we heard from Matt Spielman, the County employee in charge, that they had been able to find a crew with some time available and they will be out this coming week, probably from Monday through Wednesday or Thursday. They will be making a pretty fair mess those days by tearing up the sidewalk and some of the roadway to install a French drain system that will keep the water underground and channeled into the main sewer system. But, when they are done, the area will be fully restored and -- fingers crossed -- we'll have a clean, sanitary sidewalk back to walk on again. So, this is great to hear and nice to know that our Country government does hear us and respond even in the middle of all of the current craziness.
The nearby neighbors have gotten notice of the project, but we wanted to let everyone else know since there will likely be some impacts on both pedestrian and vehicle traffic for a few days and parking will be blocked off in that block. Probably best to avoid the area if you can, but if you do go by, give a shout out to our hard-working County employees. And, if you want to thank Matt for pushing us to the top of the list, here's his email: matt.spielman@montgomerycountymd.gov
