Loggerhead Strands on Newport’s South Beach |
When locals reported a cold-stunned sea turtle stranded on Newport’s South Beach, Oregon Coast Aquarium staff sprang into action, transporting the loggerhead back to OCAq for immediate care.
In early April, the sea turtle moved on to the next step in her recovery and was transferred to SR3's Rescue Center in Washington for long term care.

Thank You For Doubling the Love!
|
Together we raised over $100,000 as part of our matching grant for our Sees-Ha Xwee-Nish Marine Wildlife Rehabilitation Center! Aquarium donors Sean and Angela Pieper generously offered to match up to $50,000 as part of a matching campaign that ran from February to Earth Day, a benchmark that our donors surpassed.
Thank you to all who donated!

It’s pupping season on the Oregon Coast! As spring continues, harbor seals are hauling out to give birth along Oregon’s shores. After a seal gives birth, she splits her time between nursing her pup and finding food for herself. If you see a seal pup, give them space! Mom is likely foraging nearby, and your presence may prevent her from tending to her young.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of Otis, our beloved Virginia opossum. Otis had developed a spinal issue and, while he was given extra care and pain management, his quality of life continued to deteriorate, prompting the difficult decision to move forward with humane euthanasia. Otis peacefully fell asleep for the last time while surrounded by his caretakers.
As an ambassador animal, Otis helped teach our guests about opossums, backyard wildlife, and oft-misunderstood species. Otis was initially found orphaned near Otis, Oregon, and joined our ambassador animal program in 2022, quickly gaining a fan following. While our time with Otis was brief, his legacy lives on in those he delighted and inspired.

Sea Lion Humanely Euthanized
Following Injury and Decline |
A wounded California sea lion was humanely euthanized at Newport’s Port Dock One, following quality of life discussions between the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium.
The injury—a suspected shark bite—spanned the left hindquarter of the animal, prompting public concern as he remained hauled out on the docks. The decision to euthanize an animal is not made lightly, and follows extensive observation, discussion, permitting, and planning.
