Karen Karavanic (CS) was at Capitol Hill as part of the IEEE USA Capitol Visit Day. Along with others, she met with staffers from the offices of Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden and Representatives Suzanne Bonamici and Maxine Dexter. 329 IEEE members from 39 states showed up to advocate for funding for science and technology research, including the CHIPS and Science Act's workforce training programs.

The PSU Chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) hosted nearly 300 students from 19 universities across the Pacific Northwest for the ASCE PNW Regional Student Symposium. This event was an opportunity for ASCE student chapters in our region to showcase their skills by competing in various civil engineering activities, including designing/building a steel bridge, racing concrete canoes, and assembling timber structures.

The PSU Chapter of Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) traveled to Berkeley CA to compete in the annual Seismic Design Competition. The students demonstrated their knowledge of structural and geotechnical engineering by building a balsa wood structure capable of withstanding a simulated earthquake and a load test. PSU’s structure survived both tests, and the students came away with a successful design and networking connections for their engineering futures.

MME student Adan Velazquez recently earned first place for Outstanding Research Presentation at the Pacific Northwest LSAMP Conference. Velazquez began his award-winning research last summer in Maseeh College's Undergraduate Research Mentoring Program (URMP) under the guidance of Jun Jiao (MME) and continued through the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP). This win marks the second year in a row that PSU LSAMP has taken home the winning prize.

The PDX STEMcast is taking shape thanks to invaluable help from MME doctoral students Natalie Frank and Zein Sadek. The equipment is set up in the dedicated space, and we are gearing up for the first episode after a few final touches. Anyone can submit a story idea; we are especially looking to encourage students to participate We've also fielded some requests to use the space from other units at PSU, so if anyone at Maseeh is interested, the team created a request form.

During PSU's Research Week, Maseeh College is hosting an Open House on May 6th from 5-7 pm. Prospective students can visit, collect some swag, take a self-guided tour of our cutting-edge research labs, listen to Ignite-style talks from award winning faculty, and visit poster presentations of student-led research projects. Please make sure to RSVP. We hope to see you there and have something wicked planned.

Maseeh College's commencement ceremony will be on Friday, June 13th from 5-7pm at Viking Pavilion. Until May 9th, Staff and faculty can still fill out the RSVP form to volunteer to help with this year's graduation event. Tickets are available until May 15th at PSU's ticketing site.
