Greetings, Volunteers!
Happy April! The weather may not feel very Springy, but hopefully it will warm up soon! We have many exciting opportunities available this month, check them out below.
To sign up for an event this month and receive a month of free Garbage to Garden service, RSVP by email and we will help answer any questions you may have. Then simply send confirmation of your volunteer hours to volunteer@garbagetogarden.org to receive credit.
Just a reminder or a notice for those who are new to volunteering, we do ask that you try different opportunities each month!

Help to sort waste at the Green Home & Energy Show |
We are looking for volunteers to assist with sorting waste at the Green Home and Energy Show, located in South Portland. Volunteers will help to monitor waste stations and sort compost, recycling, and trash throughout the event. Volunteers will also receive a free Garbage to Garden tee shirt! If you are interested and available during one of the two shifts below, please email volunteer@garbagetogarden.org and include your preferred shift.
Saturday April 6th, 2024
Shift 1 set up and waste sorting: 8:30 am - 10:30 am
Shift 2 waste sorting: 11:30 am - 1:30 pm
Shift 3 waste sorting and break down: 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

SPRING IS IN THE AIR AT THE FARM! Come volunteer at Growing to Give in Brunswick.
|
Growing to Give is a not for profit, MOFGA-certified organic farm growing vegetables to give to those most in need in our community. They welcome volunteers ages 3 to 93 -- individuals, families, and groups. They use no-till, climate-friendly farming practices, and volunteers help out with a variety of farm tasks, such as planting seeds, transplanting seedlings, watering, weeding, mulching, spreading compost, placing hoops and row cover, staking plants, and harvesting. Some days work is out in the fields and other days it's in the greenhouse or tunnels. No previous experience is needed. We need volunteers to assist with sorting waste at the Portland Earth Day Celebration! Volunteers will help to monitor waste stations and sort compost, recycling, and trash throughout the event. Volunteer with Maine Audubon! |
Spring is just around the corner and Maine Audubon is shifting into high gear, getting ready for the busy season ahead.
As you know, they cannot fulfill our mission of protecting Maine’s wildlife and habitat without you, so here are some of the upcoming opportunities for you to lend a hand..
They currently have a number of volunteer workdays scheduled at a variety of sanctuaries across the state. You can find those opportunities here.
Volunteer Day: Spring Cleanup at Scarborough Marsh. Join us for this spring Earth Day tradition. We will gather at the Nature Center for a cleanup of the marsh and beaches. There will be refreshments and displays and information on how you can be a better steward to this beautiful part of the earth. Registration is helpful but not required. More details can be found here.

Spread the word about composting by door hanging with us! |

| In partnership with the City of Portland, we are working to promote composting efforts across Portland. We will be leading street teams to help distribute door hangers and would love your help!
Tuesday, April 9th from 9 - 11am.
To sign up for a shift, OR, if you are not available at the above time but interested on door hanging at a different time, email us!

See the below opportunities:
Green Bag Packing: 9:30am to 11am Monday through Thursday at our warehouse in South Portland
These shifts would include packing bags of fresh produce to be sent out to food insecurity families throughout the greater Portland area.
Purple Bag Packing: 1:30am to 3:00pm Mondays at our warehouse in South Portland
These shifts would include packing bags of dry goods and pantry staples to be sent out to food insecurity families throughout the greater Portland area.
Fresh Food Events: Time and location vary depending on the event
These shifts would include helping staff set up and hand out fresh food in different schools and community locations, similar to a free farmers market.
Standard Baking Pickup: 5pm to 6:30pm Monday through Thursday at our warehouse in South Portland
These shifts would include driving to Standard Baking Company to pick up their baked goods donation and bring it back to our warehouse to be bagged for distribution.
