Pasture Management and Drought

Poor management during drought can slow pasture recovery after the rain starts falling again. For that reason, farmers should develop their grazing plan to account for the summer slump and include a contingency plan for prolonged drought. This publication will focus on two aspects of managing pastures for drought:

Proactive pasture management to reduce the severity of drought stress should it occur.
Reactive management for when drought stress reaches a severity that requires a change in your usual management practices.

Non-Forage Fiber Sources for Dairy Rations

Abnormally dry conditions are raising questions on what to do if forage inventories remain limited going into winter 2023-24. One option to look at when forage yields are short is byproduct feeds high in fiber, also referred to as Non-Forage Fiber Sources. Drought 2023: Take Stock Now of Your Forage and Herd Inventory

2023 has introduced us to the new term “flash drought.” With dry conditions throughout Wisconsin and the upper mid-west, dairy producers are encouraged to inventory forage supplies and start planning for potential shortfalls. Pencil and paper, electronic spreadsheets, and commercial software options are available to assist you in creating and tracking your forage inventory.
