ALUMNI PROFILES
Name: Sophia Ferries-Rowe
Graduation Year: 2019
Currently reside: Cincinnati, OH
Favorite class while at Brebeuf Jesuit? I really enjoyed my AP Environmental Studies class with Erin Miller. It revealed the interconnected nature of our world like no other class had done for me before.
Favorite teacher/coach? This is such an unfair question! I had so many great teachers at Brebeuf, and I hate picking just one! That being said, Señora Brown was my first Spanish teacher at Brebeuf and I credit her with starting my enduring interest in learning the language. In fact, I am about to graduate with a minor in Spanish, which may not have happened without her fun and engaging lessons.
What was inspiring about him/her?
Sra. Brown brought a lot of humor to the classroom, taught about the etymology of the vocab, and made helpful connections between grammar lessons and our everyday lives. Her positive energy made me feel like she enjoyed teaching, which made me enjoy learning.
What are you doing now?
I just finished my bachelor’s degree in urban planning and minor in Spanish at the University of Cincinnati. Last semester, I was an intern for a community preservation nonprofit called Urbanist Media, and I have continued doing work for the organization this semester. I am also the president of the UC Thrift club which reduces clothing waste on campus and donates to sustainable organizations in our community, and I am very excited to say the club won Student Organization of the Year for the 2023-24 school year! Fellow Brebeuf alumnus Francisco Torres ‘19, is the treasurer of the club and has been instrumental in the club’s success. I have accepted a position with the City of Cincinnati as a City Planner in the Department of City Planning and Engagement. I will be working with an incredible team on a wide range of planning tasks from site-scale interventions to city-wide policies including the Connected Communities zoning policy changes. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity, especially as my first position out of college, and look forward to serving this beautiful and diverse city as a planner!
How did Brebeuf Jesuit help shape you into the person you are today?
Brebeuf Jesuit’s teachings of social justice shaped my entire career path. I volunteered with Beggars for the Poor for my community service class and continued volunteering for the organization. Working with the organization’s clients introduced me to the deeply-rooted issues related to housing in cities, especially in Black and Brown communities, and inspired me to pursue urban planning.
Words of wisdom or advice to our current students.
A piece of advice I have for current students is to surround yourself with people that you admire and who inspire you. When I feel discouraged, my friends, professors, mentors, employers, and classmates motivate me to continue believing in a better future for our world. Our generation has many immense issues to tackle, and that is much easier to do together.

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius
More The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius are at the heart of Ignatian Spirituality. More than 500 years ago, St. Ignatius Loyola began to use his own experiences of God to help lead others closer to God, using Scripture, prayer, reflection, and imagination.
We invite all parents and community members to join Fr. Chris Johnson, S.J., for monthly reflections on the Spiritual Exercises this year, accompanied by reflections you can do on your own between meetings. The group will meet at Brebeuf Jesuit one Saturday morning a month throughout the year, beginning on Saturday, August 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
