parent SURVEY FOR STRATEGIC PLAN - WE NEED YOUR PARTICIPATION!

Brebeuf Jesuit has engaged with a consulting firm, Independent School Management (ISM), to assist with the development of a new strategic plan for the school. Faculty Spotlight

STACY HENNESSY
What surprised you most about your first year at Brebeuf?
This may sound a bit cliché, but the schedule. Adapting to the schedule as a teacher meant that I had to remember what I taught in which class and whether I had had this group of students the day before, and if I would have them tomorrow, and for how long? Should I give a test, I ask myself, on a Day 1 so that they all have it on the same day, which seems fair, or on the day when the class meets for an hour so that the students have more time - which seems just. I did not balance it well, and as a consequence, I didn’t feel great about my contributions.
How many years have you been at Brebeuf and in what capacities?
This is my second year at Brebeuf and I work almost exclusively in religious studies. Last year I accompanied a wonderful group of students to El Salvador through which I gained a deep respect for the Jesuit Mission and the evolution of students in their journey through Brebeuf.
What's your favorite thing about the role you play at Brebeuf?
Exploring what is worth our time and thought in this project called “being human.”  I learn something every day from the students and my colleagues in the department about love, empathy, risk, justice, compassion, truth and laughter. And I learn how to question what cannot be known absolutely, which is scary, but so worthwhile.
What makes Brebeuf different from other area high schools?
Brebeuf honors adolescence. Brebeuf has structured the schedule and this supportive environment in such a way as to accommodate with joy and respect this stage in human development called adolescence. In every other high school that I have taught, the students are strictly controlled by the administration. They are told what to wear, when to move, where to go when they move, they sign in and out of space and they are not entrusted with freedom, responsibility and accountability. Brebeuf is not afraid to call itself Catholic in the true and universal sense of the word, which means being open to God’s grace coming through the whole of life, including the complete breath of religious experience. And Brebeuf doesn’t esteem the achievements of particular students more than the achievements of others, so that National Merit Finalists are celebrated as are artists and athletes. And finally, Brebeuf seeks to grow as a community. I am impressed by our efforts to stretch ourselves by examining bias, and struggling toward civil discourse in a national election which demands polarity. Here we are willing to seek, even if imperfectly, fundamental values of respect, deep listening, openness to growth - dare I say?
If one of your friends was considering sending their child to Brebeuf, what would you tell them?
I always ask the question “What do you want for your child?” If you are seeking a school that will teach your child to trust their inside voice, to accompany the child in cultivating a “Self” who can entertain with confidence the question “Who am I?”, this school is for your family. The Catholic faith is very important to me, but I can’t make my kids be Catholic. I can’t make them love this faith, I can only place them in an environment where they are invited to serve, worship, pray, lead, retreat, explore and learn. Here, my kids’ faith has deepened and it is because Brebeuf as offered them Catholicism as an engaging practice, spiritually, intellectually, and apostolically. The third thing I would share with them is this. I teach New Testament at Brebeuf to students who are Hindu, Jewish, Buddhist, Agnostic, Atheist, Christian, Catholic, Christian and more - and do so mindful that there is something in the sacred texts of religion that is deeply universal and wildly unique. In entering this conversation together as a dialogue, not a fight, as a place to explore and be curious, we experience the world as it can be and we graduate young adults who are poised in global conversations. That makes me feel great as a parent, and as a teacher. If that is what you want for your family, choose Brebeuf.
You have had an interesting career path that has led to Brebeuf, can you tell us about it?
Honestly, that would take too long.
What's something that challenges you, and how do you navigate that challenge?
Aside from exercise, I find teaching Morality to be enormously challenging. I get how to teach when I read the textbooks, but it all seems to change when I walk in the classroom. I feel most like a mom in this class because it's the course that makes me want to give advice - what to do/what not to do with your life, and it takes the whole of my being just to teach the framework. I am challenged every day to really listen to what is on the minds, and what weighs on the hearts of the students. I am not where I want to be, but I am hopeful, and it is that hope that gets me back in the room day after day.
What do you like to do in your spare time, when not working at Brebeuf?
I like to cycle
Tell us something about you that most people don’t know…
I edited the galleys for a book by Henri Nouwen.

13th Annual Turkey Bowl Benefitting Wheeler Mission

Come one, come all and bring your family and friends!
This Saturday, November 19 at the Carmel Ice Skadium, plan to come cheer on the Brebeuf Braves Hockey Team as they take on Carmel Blue in the 13th Annual Turkey Bowl benefiting the Wheeler Mission.
Game time is 4:15 p.m.
There is no charge for admission, but we are asking all to consider bringing a turkey for Wheeler Mission, or clothing, hygiene products, groceries, and linens.
The team that brings the most turkeys wins the Turkey Bowl.  Brebeuf won last year with 75 turkeys, so we need all of your help to ensure the trophy stays with the Braves this year!
Turkey Bowling will take place after the game on the ice, and students bowl for free. Bring your school spirit, some turkeys, and cheer on the Braves to victory!

#BrebeufDrives

Our current #BrebeufDrive is our annual Help for the Holidays collection for the Catholic Charities Christmas Store.  This is an opportunity for the Brebeuf community to actively be men and women for others. While unifying with the school through a collaborative effort, we are also strengthening a bond to a community in need of assistance.
Every year during the holiday season, Catholic Charities sponsors The Christmas Store. More than 700 needy families will shop for Christmas gifts and clothing for their children. Donations of time, gifts and money help bring a brighter Christmas season for these families in need. In many cases, the gifts provided by the Christmas Store will be the ONLY Christmas items these families will receive. The results of these drives will provide gifts to a vast number of individuals and families, bringing additional joy for the holiday season.
