Phakchok Rinpoche to Present on Radical Happiness: October 10

Phakchok Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist monk, will offer a presentation to the Academy community on "radical happiness" on Tuesday, October 10 at 2:15 PM. Speaking at schools in many east coast locations, this presentation promises to benefit anyone who is struggling to keep a balance in life between work (or school!) and family, coping with the fast pace of daily life, a career and at the same time aspiring to flourish and grow: intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. Despite Mr. Rinpoche's origins, this is a secular presentation, not focused on Buddhism. One and all are welcome to attend.

Blood Drive: October 13

The Red Cross returns to campus next week for the first of their twice-yearly Blood Drives at The Academy! The Blood Drive will be held on Friday, October 13, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM. Students will be bringing home donor forms (and parental consent forms, for students age 16), with the goal of every student finding at least one person to donate blood. Appointments can be made by filling out the donor form and turning it in to the Main Office, or by calling the Main Office during regular business hours, or by visiting the Red Cross Blood Drive appointment page and entering our zip code. Baked goods for donors are also a high priority, so there are ways for everyone to lend a hand. We appreciate in advance your support of this important service event that both saves lives and helps provide scholarship money to our seniors towards their first year of college tuition!

7th and 8th Grade Parent Roundtable Discussions at GCC with
Aethena Enzer-Mahler, LICSW

OCTOBER 17, 7 - 8:30 PM

We are pleased to be once again offering parents the opportunity to meet with The Academy's psychological consultant and school counselor, Aethena Enzer-Mahler. Aethena will cover important points about the developmental stages of students in the grade levels indicated, as well as address any questions or concerns that parents might have. These evenings are sure to provide great food for thought, whether or not you have concerns about your child's mental health or emotional well-being. We hope that the Greenfield location will provide a space more central to the majority of parents. The discussions will be held in the The MacLeish Conference Room (Room C307) near the library on the 3rd floor of GCC's main building at 1 College Drive. Please contact Nora Bates Zale with questions or concerns.

COMMUNITY SERVICE COUNCIL LEADING
THE ACADEMY'S EFFORTS TO HELP PUERTO RICO

The Community Service Council is back with its change drive, this time to support the efforts of the Hispanic Foundation's UNIDOS Disaster Relief Fund. Council members chose this organization, in part because 100% of all donations will be used to help families and children recover from the disastrous impact of Hurricane Maria.  To see the level of devastation and need, click here. Please help your child(ren) remember to add to their team's donation jar over the next few weeks. Thank you!

Seeking Newspapers for Upcoming Pumpkin Carving

As is our long-standing tradition, we'll be carving pumpkins at the end of this month. We are seeking newspapers to cover the Common Room tables in order to help us contain the inevitable pumpkin-guts mess. If you are a regular newspaper recipient and can set some aside to give to the cause, please contact Nora Bates Zale. Thanks in advance!

Academy Athletics - Week of October 2, 2017

The Girls Varsity soccer team had an exciting week. They tied Putney 0-0 on Monday with Lilah F. holding down the shutout in goal. The girls lost a nail-biter to Four Rivers, 2-1, on Tuesday. Ruby C scored the Academy's lone goal, while Calla J and Francesca R played well all over the field and Greta M had a good game on defense.
On Monday, the Boys Varsity Soccer team lost 4-3 to Putney. Hendrik P, Liam F, and Nacho TP contributed to all Charlemont scores, as they each had a goal and an assist. Kyle N had ten saves in goal. On Wednesday, the boys defeated White Oak 12-2 behind goals from Ishan S (4), Harper W-W (2), Hendrik P, Tor O, Raymond M, Alec D, Nat B-O, and Will D.
The JV Boys Soccer team tied Eaglebrook School 1-1 in an exciting game on Tuesday afternoon. Raymond M scored late in the second half to knot up the score. Nacho TP was excellent in goal, playing the whole game and making ten saves. The fullback line, led by Harper W-W and Sam R, was solid throughout the contest. On offense, the Academy midfielders connected with strikers for near-goals on several occasions. Atticus R and Alex T were a force on both offense and defense. Overall, it was a great team effort.
The Cross-Country team raced at Four Rivers on Wednesday and look forward to having a healthy team back on their home course next Wednesday.
On Thursday, a co-ed team of mostly 7th and 8th graders lost a nail-biter to the Greenfield Center School by a score of 4-3. The Aardvark squad came back twice from two-goal deficits to get to within reach of a victory. Atticus R had two goals and Charlie P added another, while Gwen H was stellar in goal, making 13 saves. She was aided by a defensive line that improved as the game wore on. These two teams will play again before the end of the season.
