SPORTS RECAP, Week of September 17

The Academy boys Varsity soccer team defeated Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School 5-3 on Monday behind a hat trick by Nat B-O. Tucker Z-A scored off a free kick from 40 yards away and Raymond M also scored, while Nico V had three assists. Alex T came up with some pivotal saves in the second half, while Ishan S, Sam R, and Bennet B also made big contributions on defense.

The Charlemont XC Team ran an optional meet on Wednesday at Ashley reservoir, hosted by White Oak School. In this non scored meet Academy runners got their season started with some excellent performances. Paloma H-S came in 12th out of 51 with a time of 23:38. Katie T placed 32nd with a time of 28:26 to round out the girls’ squad.

On the boys’ side, with many of them running their first XC meet ever, Will D ran at 18:52 for a top 10 finish out of 73 runners. Eli C was 27th with a personal record of 20:17 for a 5K. Finishing in a close pack David A and Tor O finished 47th and 48th with times of 22:55 and 23:11 respectively. To finish out the 5th spot on the boys side Izzy S had a time of 27:18 for 67th overall in the race. Nice work Aardvark XC runners!

SEEKING SPEAKERS FOR FALL HOLIDAYS

As has been the case for many years, The Academy remains open on Indigenous Peoples Day (as recognized by states and municipalities across the nation, but known more traditionally as Columbus Day, 10/8/18) and Veterans Day (recognized this year on 11/12/18). We seek to recognize the importance of these days by inviting speakers to campus to help us understand a variety of related issues. If any community members have ideas of potential speakers for either of these days (or for other, non-holiday opportunities at other points in the year), please contact Nora Bates Zale.

Blood Drive: October 12

The Red Cross returns to campus next month for the first of their twice-yearly Blood Drives at The Academy! The Blood Drive will be held on Friday, October 12, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM. Students will be bringing home donor forms (and parental consent forms, for students age 16), with the goal of every student finding at least one person to donate blood. Appointments can be made by filling out the donor form and turning it in to the Main Office, or by calling the Main Office during regular business hours, or by visiting the Red Cross Blood Drive appointment page and entering our zip code. Baked goods for donors are also a high priority, so there are ways for everyone to lend a hand. We appreciate in advance your support of this important service event that both saves lives and helps provide scholarship money to our seniors towards their first year of college tuition!
