A Note from the President

As Tiger families, I know that you find news stories about the challenging legislative sessions ahead particularly troubling. You are sacrificing to send your Tiger(s) to LSU because of their desire to receive a top-notch education. You’re not alone in being concerned – everyone has an interest in your Tiger’s education. And together, we are going to continue to share our successes and demonstrate that LSU is worth every penny of Louisiana’s continued investment.
Friends, alumni, and community leaders are angry to hear that cuts to LSU are even being considered, because they know how valuable the university is to Louisiana. To this end, the LSU Alumni Association has reinvigorated Tiger Advocates, its grassroots advocacy effort, to keep people informed about legislative events that could impact LSU. Our students have organized their own efforts to build on successes from last year. And the LSU Research Works initiative shows how LSU’s unique research mission works to provide solutions to society’s grand challenges while simultaneously engaging students in these efforts.
We’re going to keep telling the story of LSU’s success to remind everyone that our university’s impact doesn’t stop at the campus gates. Sign up for the new LSU Postscript to get monthly highlights of our most recent accomplishments, and spread the word that LSU's education, research, and service make a real difference in the world.
As always, thank you for trusting us with your Tigers.
Sincerely,
F. King Alexander
LSU President

The beginning of the semester also marks the beginning of career events and recruiting season. The largest career fair of the spring semester, the Career Expo, is just around the corner on Feb. 4!  Why should your son or daughter attend?
Freshmen and sophomores use this event as a way to learn more about how they can use their degree for success in the job market, test the waters to see if their goals are in line with what employers are seeking in candidates and to begin building a professional network in their field of interest. Many interns are recruited through relationships established at this event!
Juniors are strongly encouraged to attend to find a first, second or even third internship to strengthen their professional skills and résumé.
Seniors have an opportunity to meet employers in their field, discuss full-time opportunities and set the stage for that professional interview.
To prepare students to put their best foot forward, we offer an assortment of resources and activities to polish up their job search and professional presentation skills:
  • Careers2Geaux contains a list of employers attending the event.  Use this resource to see who is coming and to research companies of interest! Students can also download the Careers by Symplicity app on their smart phone through the App Store or Google Play.
  • LSU Student Career Guide offers tips on how to work the Career Expo, a guide to résumé writing and MORE!
  • Appointments and walk-in hours are always available. Preparation Expo is Jan. 25-Feb. 2, and offers all-day walk-in hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Encourage your student to stop by and get prepared to Geaux Get Hired at the Expo!
  • Learn more about the Career Expo and other events!
Parents are also invited to recruit for their companies through the LSU Olinde Career Center.  Contact us to learn more about how you can Hire a Tiger!

LSU Academic Programs Abroad

The office of Academic Programs Abroad offers LSU students an affordable and safe option to study abroad that won’t take them away from campus for an entire semester. Each program is run by LSU faculty from start to finish. LSU professors travel with the students to the program location, teach the courses, and provide enriching learning experiences onsite. Students usually take up to 6 hours of course credit while traveling the globe! Students are responsible for three different fees to pay for these programs: LSU summer tuition, airfare, and the program fee which provides food, housing, and excursions. For students that feel there isn’t enough time in their degree plan to spend a whole semester abroad, these summer programs are fantastic and safe options to see the world while earning LSU course credit. The deadline for summer program applications is April 1, 2016 and you can click here for more information about the different programs.
Tell your students about the upcoming Study Abroad Fair for more information on all things study abroad! Program Directors will be there to answer questions on any summer programs, as well as semester long exchanges. The Fair will be held Thursday, February 25, from 11-3pm in the Union Royal Cotillion Ballroom. Of course, parents are also invited to attend the Study Abroad Fair.
