WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL

We look forward to seeing everyone next week!

WHAT TO EXPECT ON REGISTRATION DAY

Faculty and staff members, and seniors, are looking forward to greeting all students and families on August 28, Monday afternoon, from 2 to 5 PM. Registration activities will take about an hour and include returning paperwork, receiving information about/from the Academy Parent Council, meeting advisors, having student photos taken, and locating lockers, mailboxes, and cubbies. Families of 8th-11th graders should arrive anywhere in the 2 to 5 PM time frame. Seventh grade families should plan to come to Registration at about 4:00, just prior to their back-to-school potluck picnic that will begin at 5:00.

INTRODUCING OUR NEW SCHOOL COUNSELOR -

PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSULTANT

We are pleased to announce that Aethena Enzer-Mahler, LICSW and member of The Academy’s Class of 2000 will join us as our new School Counselor and Psychological Consultant.
A message from Ms. Enzer-Mahler:
Dear Academy Families,
Hello! I am so excited to be joining the Academy community and staff, as I return to a place that I loved so much in my youth. I am looking forward to seeing how things have changed, what has stayed the same, and getting to know the current students, families, faculty and staff. In addition to being at The Academy, I work as a therapist with children and families and consult with many schools in the area. As a consultant, my goal is to support school communities in developing an understanding of mental health and behavioral needs and how to effectively approach them with compassion.
As a therapist, I work with children and adolescents of all ages and utilize a person-centered approach that helps to build the individual’s self-advocacy while also developing strategies to manage in-the-moment feelings. I am also constantly researching the ways in which play leads to learning and growth in both cognitive and emotional development in people of all ages, and I integrate this into sessions to help my clients engage a bit more joyfully in the world. I am eager to collaborate with The Academy and to offer compassionate support for all members of the community.
I look forward to connecting with each of you. Please feel free to contact me as needed.
Families or students who wish to make an appointment to see Ms. Enzer-Mahler may do so by contacting Dean of Students Nora Bates Zale.

RAFTING DAY 2017:

SEPTEMBER 1

As is tradition, Academy students and faculty will head to Zoar Outdoor for a fun-filled day of whitewater rafting on the Deerfield River on Friday, September 1. Please make sure that you and your child have signed the release form that was sent out in the registration packet before Registration on Monday, August 28, so that it may be turned in at that time.

The following information is direct from Zoar:
WHAT TO EXPECT:  All guests will be required to wear a Zoar Outdoor-issued PFD (Personal Floatation Device) and helmet. You will also be provided with a paddle. This trip rafts a 10-mile section of class II and III whitewater on the Deerfield River.
WHAT TO WEAR AND BRING:  You are required to wear sneakers or other shoes that can be secured to your feet. Water shoes are fine, but no flip-flops or Crocs! In warm summer weather, some guests are comfortable in bathing suits/swim trunks or light layers. However, we ask you do not wear cotton, as it will keep you cold and wet throughout the trip. Wool and synthetic materials such as polypropylene, nylon, and fleece, are appropriate for cooler weather and water temperatures. Any exposed skin should be covered with waterproof sunscreen.
Wetsuits, splash jackets, and neoprene river booties are available if you need them. Expect everything you bring with you on the raft to get wet.
Students who need to wear glasses or sunglasses should come with Croakies, or some such eyewear retainer. Buses will run on a 4:45 PM departure schedule, arriving at their stops approximately 30 minutes earlier than they do when running on the 5:15 schedule.
IMPORTANT:  Please pack a lunch, including water and snacks. These will be transported to the lunch area along the river.
Please contact Nora Bates Zale with any questions.

NEWS FROM THE ACADEMY PARENTS COUNCIL (APC)

Welcome to the new school year!  Come meet APC co-chairs Paul Catanzaro and Diane Bigelow at Registration on Monday. Be sure to complete the APC 2017-2018 volunteer survey then, too. This is the best way to share how you may be able to help the Academy community this year. If you will not be at Registration, be on the look-out for a link to this important survey in the weekly e-Bulletin or an email.
Please mark your calendars for the first APC meeting of the year: Tuesday, October 3rd at 6:30 PM. We will be hosted by Janet Mullen and Noah Grunberg (9 Gardner Avenue in Shelburne Falls). All parents are invited!

EARLY BIRD AUCTION TICKETS AT REGISTRATION!

Mark your calendars for the 14th annual Cornucopia Auction and Social, November 4 from 5 to 9 PM.  Tickets will be available at Registration, for the discounted price of $15 each. After Monday the price goes up to $20. However, the auction committee is offering a "buy two get one free" deal no matter when you purchase your tickets, so you can bring a friend! This event is a wonderful social evening for adults, a terrific opportunity to do some holiday shopping, and a great way to benefit Academy financial aid and programs. You can purchase tickets at the Business Office table during Registration and bill the cost to your school account. Thanks for being a part of this important - and fun - effort!

NEW INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS JOINING US THIS YEAR

In addition to welcoming Julen from France and Nacho from Spain, we’ll also be welcoming Worapon from Thailand and Hendrik from Belgium to our community this year. Worapon and Hendrik will be living with the Walsh Warder family (P, 13, 16) for the first two months of the school year. We’re still looking for longer term host families for both boys. Interested families should contact Sabine Mauri.
