$70K raised for local family at Hammers & High Heels

The 13th annual Hammers & High Heels fundraiser benefiting Habitat for Humanity Williamson-Maury’s Women Build was a big success Friday at The Factory at Franklin.
The sold-out event raised $70,000 for the Lemus family.
Dawn Davenport, Emmy-winning journalist, was the emcee for the evening, and she became emotional when Lemus and her children — son, Isaiah, and daughter, Mia — took the stage.

County recognized for animal center services

Williamson County Animal Center was recently recognized with an Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo).
The awards honor innovative, effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents. NACo recognized the programs and services at Williamson County Animal Center that engage the community through education, support and free or low-cost resources to assist pet owners.
“Programs like pet food assistance, free spay/neuter and training opportunities are designed to offer solutions to common problems people encounter with pet ownership,” WCAC Director Ondrea Johnson said.

Softball: Summit comes alive late, advances past Franklin in Region 6-4A semifinals

FRANKLIN – Lily Kate Richards scattered five hits and struck out seven while going the distance for the Summit High School softball team and was aided by Tarek Scherr’s dramatic two-run blast over the center field fence in the top of the seventh to lead the Spartans to a 7-0 victory over Franklin Monday at Cheek Park in the Region 6-4A semifinals.
The win sets up a regional championship contest Wednesday at Centennial. The Cougars beat District 12-4A champion Nolensville 4-1 on the road in the other semifinal Monday.

Moore Elementary students participate in 30th 'Walk to Wellness'

Fourth-graders at Moore Elementary concluded their 30th annual “Walk to Wellness” through the historic Natchez Trace area with an emotional school-wide celebration Friday.
After walking 28 miles over two days alongside select parents, faculty and staff, students ran back into the open arms of teary-eyed relatives and friends waiting at the school with decorated signs.
The young students departed Thursday and walked 18 miles, stayed the night in the school's gym and walked the final 10 miles Friday covering a distance longer than a marathon in the two-day affair.

DFA relaunching Franklin Locals summer volunteer program

After a hiatus last year, the Downtown Franklin Association is seeking applicants for its Franklin Locals volunteer, greeter and concierge program for summer shifts in June. Franklin Locals are trained on-the-street representatives who answer questions, give recommendations and share the story of Franklin with out-of-town friends and tourists.
“It was close to pandemic time that a lot of the programming sort of died out,” DFA Managing Director Heidi Hood said.

Franklin Fire Department administrative assistant DeSantis retires

After serving the Franklin Fire Department for the past seven years, Administrative Assistant Marlena DeSantis retired Friday. A retirement luncheon to celebrate her career and contributions took place last week at the Franklin Fire Department Headquarters.
Franklin Fire Chief Glenn Johnson thanked DeSantis for her dedicated service.
“We appreciate her commitment to detail and accuracy, and especially the care she took with all that she did," he said. "She has been a tremendous friend and asset to all of us. We will miss her, but are excited for her as she begins her retirement adventure.”

Predators sign Russian goalie Askarov to entry-level deal

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Nashville Predators have signed Iaroslav Askarov to a three-year entry level contract, two years after making him the sixth Russian-born goalie taken in the NHL draft first round at No. 11 overall.
The 19-year-old spent most of the 2021-22 season with the VHL's Neva Saint Petersburg in his native country, posting a 5-2-2 record with a 2.57 goals-against average in nine games. Askarov also appeared six times for SKA Saint Petersburg in the KHL with a 1.81 GAA and .913 save percentage. He was 5-4-0 with a shutout while posting a 1.21 GAA and .951 save percentage in nine KHL appearances the previous season.

Joe Garrett Crabtree, 94, retired Product Designer for Murray-Ohio and resident of Franklin, died Friday, May 13, 2022 at Alive Hospice in Nashville.
A graveside inurnment will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. at Pleasant Mount Cemetery with Patrick Kerstiens officiating. Military honors will be provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements.

Francisco Bermudez Soto, 74, of Spring Hill, passed away May 15, 2022.
Frank was born Oct. 9, 1947, in Poteet, Texas. He retired as an officer from the Franklin Police Department after 25 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joy Soto; daughter, Kathy (Joe); son, Kevin (Katie); five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; siblings, Matilda (Bill) and Paula (Bob); and numerous nieces and nephews.
