Volunteer Iowa Announces Monumental Level of Public & Private Support for National Service Programs in Iowa
Commission approves over $14.2 Million in AmeriCorps projects
June 27, 2017 (DES MOINES, IA) – Volunteer Iowa (Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service) has approved $14.2 million in federal and state AmeriCorps funding that will leverage private and local funding to support over 860 AmeriCorps members.
With these awards, Iowa will now have nearly 1,600 AmeriCorps members serving, a record total. This new total brings Iowa to over 7,000 National Service positions. AmeriCorps State grants provide funding to local organizations to support AmeriCorps members meeting critical community needs in the areas of education, disaster services, health, environmental stewardship, economic opportunity, and opioid prevention.
Governor Kim Reynolds, who is a champion in engaging more Iowans in service, has played a vital role in helping increase opportunities to serve since the creation of the Governor’s Council on National Service in 2014. “This funding is a big win for Iowa in the war against opioid addiction,” Gov. Reynolds said. “The money helps meet the critical needs of AmeriCorps members serving on the front lines in substance abuse prevention programs across the state.”

Organizations will be recruiting AmeriCorps members to begin service this fall, and join the more than 80,000 AmeriCorps members serving across the country in 21,600 locations. AmeriCorps members receive a modest living stipend and a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, or scholarship, upon completion of their service.
Since the program’s inception in 1994, more than 1 million men and women have served in AmeriCorps, providing more than 1.4 billion hours of service and have earned more than $3.3 billion in education scholarships to pay for college or pay back student loans.
Volunteer Iowa is responsible for administering federal funding of AmeriCorps State programs. Iowans interested in serving in AmeriCorps can learn more at volunteeriowa.org.
