| October is Health Literacy Month
Health literacy is not just a function of individuals’ skills and abilities, but is also a function of the demands and complexities of the systems with which individuals interact. People experiencing homelessness are at high risk for limited health literacy and have lower health status than the general population, which increases the burden of limited health literacy on their health. To improve individual health and build healthy communities, health care providers need to recognize and address the unique culture, language, and health literacy of diverse consumers and communities. Effective health communication is as important to health care as clinical skill. In October, please become familiar with relevant resources from Health Literacy Month and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

| Sneak Peek: Forthcoming Policy Brief on Insurance Changes for HCH Consumers
Though many are still left out, Obamacare is markedly increasing insurance coverage among HCH clients. While small gains in coverage were made in states that did not expand Medicaid (moving from 25% insured in 2012 to 30% in 2014), it comes as no surprise that the largest gains for HCH patients occurred in states that expanded Medicaid under the ACA (43% in 2012 to 66% in 2014). Further state-by-state analysis is currently underway and a policy brief and webinar on the findings will be forthcoming. Stay tuned!
