The Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) is supportive of our veterinary students interacting and developing relationships with colleagues regarding future professional employment opportunities. The SAVMA Practice Partners Program was developed to foster these interactions and relationships.
The purpose of this monthly newsletter is to equitably and consistently share information from SAVMA Practice Partners with the veterinary student body at the Texas A&M CVMBS.

Circle B Veterinary Hospital

What Lies Beyond the Paycheck?
It is no secret that as a profession we are short staffed and newly graduating veterinarians are highly sought after. For new grads who decide to go into clinics after graduation the biggest question they face should be:
Will I accept a position in a Veterinary Hospital that is owned by a corporation, privately owned, or will I open my own practice?
I remember as a veterinary student being inundated with corporations flaunting their benefits to our class. Therefore, to help you answer this question we felt, it was important to present some general benefits of working at a privately owned practice, since they tend to be underrepresented.
Sit back and read our top 7 reasons!
  1. The owner of the practice, a.k.a. the decision maker, is a lot more accessible than the board of directors that may not even live in the same state.
  2. The focus is on staff well-being and not just the bottom-line
  3. The community bond is much stronger. This provides the opportunity to be active in your community and gain friendships, which leads to a healthier lifestyle.
  4. The team member who decides when the staff needs a break, or a teambuilding activity, is there with you in the ups and downs of the day and not behind a desk in a corporate office
  5. In private practice you have the freedom to practice medicine the way you want, to be creative and try new techniques.
  6. When you need a new medication you can just ask the practice owner and most times have it ordered the same day for the patient.
  7. Most private practices allow for more flexibility within your day-to-day schedule; if you need an appointment to be an hour instead of 30 minutes you can make that choice.
These are just a few of the many benefits of a private practice we have experienced in our time in the field. There are many more reasons why people chose one over the other. The ultimate answer is, what will make you happy at the end of the day and what will make you excited to get up and go into work the next day!
The good news is, no matter what you chose, you will learn a lot about the profession and yourself in that first year out of school. Good luck, you got this!
