Last week was spring break for the university, but many of our students chose to spend part of their time pursuing academic endeavors. Thirteen FSU Law students participated in our 11th annual Alternative Spring Break Program and traveled to Apopka to assist migrant and seasonal farmworkers by working with the Farmworker Association of Florida. The program, which is coordinated by our Public Interest Law Center, is an opportunity for students to observe the challenges faced by this population and to receive training on conducting outreach and educating workers about their legal rights. Student activities included working in nurseries, taking a “toxic tour” of Lake Apopka, talking with farmworkers, and learning about farmworker immigration issues, human and labor trafficking, the H2A guest worker program, pesticide exposure and heat stress. Meanwhile in Tallahassee, many of our students attended our Law and Risk Management course, which is held every year during spring break. Taught by alumnus Fred Karlinsky (’92), the course provides students with a wealth of valuable information on risk management policy and tips for success in the practice of law and business. Speakers included industry specialists in Florida's insurance market and leaders in Florida's administration and public finance sectors. We were especially delighted to welcome to the course 12 students from our online Juris Master Program. The JM students hail from around the nation, so it was nice to meet them in person and have them on campus. No matter where they were, we hope all of our students enjoyed spring break!

“I highly appreciate being admitted as a visiting scholar to the FSU College of Law. My current research examines the criteria for incorporation of international law into the United States’ legal system in a comparative perspective with the Russian approach. In particular my work explores what techniques the U.S. courts use to employ international law to resolve transnational disputes and to interpret national legislation. Being a part of the FSU College of Law team gives me a unique opportunity to have access to rich resources of the Law Research Center and to consult with leading legal professionals among faculty and beyond. I invite any interested students, scholars and practitioners from FSU and generally from the United States and other countries to cooperate with me and my home university.”

“My entire career would not have been possible but for my incredible experience at FSU Law. The deans (especially Don Weidner), the professors (especially Chuck Ehrhardt and John Yetter), my fellow classmates and the wonderful overall atmosphere at the College of Law were instrumental in helping me along the way. That is the reason I stay involved with the law school, host summer interns and support the school financially. I am quite proud to be a member of the FSU Law family.”

“As I get ready to enter the legal field, I feel confident and prepared thanks to FSU Law’s faculty and resources. Most memorably, the externships I participated in gave me experiences applying the substantive knowledge I learned in the classroom to real-world situations. I really appreciate that FSU Law provided me with the opportunity to receive a practical education.”
