Update: Anthem Data Breach
The investigation into the Anthem Data Breach that was announced on February 5th is ongoing. At this time, there are still many unanswered questions, but we wanted to pass along an update based on the information that we have recently received from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield:
- Anthem is a company that owns a number of BlueCross BlueShield companies. Anthem is a separate company from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.
- According to Excellus BCBS, Anthem is in the process of sharing files that Excellus is reviewing to better assess what members might have had information that was compromised during the breach as a result of receiving services in Anthem markets. However, they have no details to offer up at this point. If Excellus BCBS and Anthem identify any impacted customers, a formal notification process will take place that directly informs the impacted customer.
Anthem announced on February 11th that it will be offering two years of free identity protection services to any member impacted by the cyber attack. According to Excellus BCBS, Anthem will be offering this same service if any Excellus BlueCross BlueShield member was impacted. If Anthem and Excellus BCBS identify that an Excellus BCBS member was impacted by the breach, that member will be formally notified and offered those identity protection services.
- Anthem has set up a special website with information about this data breach including an FAQ. You can visit this website at www.AnthemFacts.com. We encourage you visit this website for the latest and most up-to-date information.

We will continue to monitor this closely and pass along information as we receive it. As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
