Hello Friend,
ONDA’s restoration program has had one helluva productive spring and early summer.
In this edition of Notes from the Field, we’ll look back in the rear view mirror at highlights from recent stewardship trips, and take a peek at what’s just around the corner for the fall.
Denny Jones Ranch
In April, a crew of volunteers from Bend, Portland and points between converged on Denny Jones Ranch, near Juntura, Oregon, where they removed encroaching juniper from 230 acres of sage grouse habitat, supporting the Burns Paiute Tribe’s efforts to preserve cultural resources for tribal members and improve critical habitat for fish and wildlife.

In May, a crew of ONDA volunteers headed out past Prineville to continue building one of the most challenging fences in Central Oregon to protect three quarters of a mile of the South Fork Crooked River, an Area of Critical Environmental Concern and proposed Wild and Scenic River.

Complete this fence and restore the South Fork Crooked River.
13 ONDA volunteers enjoyed spectacular conditions in May as they made an impressive three miles of barbed wire fence more wildlife friendly.
This project opened up migration routes for fleet-footed pronghorn and other desert wildlife, and marked the beginning of an exciting new partnership with the Bureau of Land Management’s Lakeview District.
In June and July, the 2022 Tribal Stewards gained experience in conservation and restoration by fencing springs and repairing beaver dam analogs in the Malheur National Forest, supporting the Burns Paiute Tribe’s efforts to restore threatened bull trout and more.
Coming up >> Take part in hands-on efforts to restore critical habitat for salmon and steelhead.
If this heat wave has you daydreaming about crisp fall days, you'll be glad you signed up for one of those upcoming fall trips, or others, at onda.org/trips!
And, as always, thank you for supporting ONDA's science-based approach to desert restoration!
See you in the desert,
