WELCOME TO MS. KAYLA STORRS, OUR NEW DIRECTOR OF EQUITY AND INCLUSION
Brebeuf Jesuit is pleased to welcome Ms. Kayla Storrs to our community as our new Director of Equity and Inclusion. Her first day on campus is Monday, August 31.
Ms. Storrs is a Texas native, and just moved to Indianapolis from Norman, Oklahoma. There, she most recently served as the Assistant Director for Diversity Enrichment Programs in the Office of Admissions at the University of Oklahoma. She received her Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in Health Studies, and African and African American Studies, from the University of Oklahoma. She then went on to complete a Master's in Public Health at the University of Kentucky. After returning to Oklahoma, in addition to her work there in the Office of Admissions, she has been pursuing a Ph.D in Adult and Higher Education, which she expects to complete in the coming year. Her research studies have focused on the success of first-generation college students.
Ms. Storrs brings deep experience in supporting students and faculty through a variety of resource groups, programs, and professional development. She also taught courses at Oklahoma as an Adjunct Faculty member, and is fluent in Spanish. In describing her approach, she writes: "I build relationships with everyone with whom I interact, getting to know people as people, and becoming genuinely invested in each individual’s success, regardless of what that may look like. The culture that I have created teaches others that they are of value, as are their peers and others around them- that everyone has a story, that story makes them unique, and those stories help us understand each other and the world. In this culture, everyone is encouraged to be authentically themselves, thus encouraging them to value the authenticity of others’ lives and experiences."
We are thrilled for Ms. Storrs to join the Brebeuf Jesuit community and for our students, faculty & staff to get to know her.

21-DAY IGNATIAN RACIAL EQUITY CHALLENGE
Friday, August 28, marks the anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech. In light of the recent shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and the subsequent protests, it is imperative that we continue the “march” forward at Brebeuf Jesuit continuing to analyze and confront issues of race, racism, and equity.
To that end, Brebeuf Jesuit will engage in a 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge that will be introduced to students on Friday, August 28 and begin on Monday, August 31. These three weeks provide needed focus and time for prayer on race and equity.

FIRST FRIDAY EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT ON SEPTEMBER 4
On the first Friday of each month during the school year (with the exception of January 1), the 7:45 a.m. Mass in the Brebeuf Jesuit Chapel will conclude with the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. The Blessed Sacrament will then remain exposed into the second PRT (1:45 - 2:20 p.m.) with benediction and reposition at about 2:05 p.m.
If you are interested in spending some time in prayer in the Brebeuf Jesuit Chapel (10 minutes, an hour, more, less) between 8:00 a.m. and 2:20 p.m. on these days, email Fr. Chris ( cjohnson@brebeuf.org) with your desired arrival and departure times, and he will register you as a visitor.
Within Catholic tradition there is a rich variety of devotional prayer. Prayer before the Blessed Sacrament exposed is one of those devotions. Some may be familiar with this practice and others not. If you would like to learn a bit more about it, whether you have an interest in engaging in the practice or not, Fr. Chris would be pleased to take your questions.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT INTRODUCES MEMBEAN VOCABULARY TOOL
As you well know, the foremost way to improve student scores on AP exams and on verbal sections of the college entrance exams is by increasing our students’ working vocabularies. As such, this spring and summer, the English Department piloted a new online vocabulary training program called Membean. To learn more about this new program, click here to view a three-minute parent video.
Membean’s online platform will be taking the place of our Word Within the Word study for all Brebeuf students. Because we worked closely with Membean throughout initial COVID-19 quarantining, we qualify for a special subscription price of just $9 per student for the year. This compares with a usual $32/per student subscription price without the Membean pilot, and offers a much more comprehensive, individualized approach to vocabulary acquisition than our previous approach. Thus, we are requesting that students respond to the pop-up messages requesting the fee with payment within the first three times students access their accounts on the website.
We are excited to offer such a valuable vocabulary training program to our students, and we are certain our students will astound you with the improvement in comprehension and retention that Membean provides, as well as the copious new words in their conversational lexicons—their decreased palavering will be a bonus! Students have a sign-in and calibration link in their Google Classroom Tool Kits.
