Wednesday morning, early, I passed a congregant at the gym. “Are you buoyed, Bill? Are you buoyed, at least a little?” Another friend used that term later in the morning: “I’m feeling buoyed.” Buoyed. Held up. Floating. Light of Spirit. Tuesday’s election offered many reasons to celebrate, especially here in Oregon: movement toward affordable housing, the protection of our ‘sanctuary’ status, the Portland Clean Energy Initiative, the progressive candidates elected. There were far more cheers than moans among the congregants that gathered at church Tuesday evening. Across the nation, it was not a tsunami, but some balancing of power may well have been restored. Join us THIS SUNDAY, Nov. 11, after either service in Fuller Hall for our All-Community Celebration Potluck Brunch, created by you!
This is a chance for our dedicated congregants to showcase all sorts of fun and delicious recipes in the spirit of community. This week is the time to do some grocery shopping and plan what sweet or savory finger-food you might bring to share.
How it works:
• Before each service, please deliver your items to Fuller Hall (ONLY bring containers you don’t need back). • Bring finger food ONLY! Have your items precut or prepared as small individual portion sizes for 10–20 people. • Bring items that can be held safely at room temperature (there is no heating or cooling for food items). • Label your food! We’ll have a well-marked “food sensitivities” table for special foods without certain ingredients.

Eliot Chapel
Join the Immigrant Justice Action Group (IJAG) for the Dreamer's of Oregon: Out of the Shadows sponsored by Bienestar. The event shares a photo exhibit that features portraits of “Dreamers,” undocumented young adults who came with their families to the U.S. as children. By highlighting Dreamers’ aspirations, accomplishments, and humanity, the exhibit works to change the dominant narrative around immigration. Two Dreamers will share their stories and their dreams. The photo exhibit will be on display in Fuller Hall on Sunday, Nov. 11.

Living with Loss: How Will I Get through the Holidays?
Sundays: Nov. 11 and 18 and Dec. 2 from 10:45 a.m.–12:15 p.m. Holidays can be some of the most challenging times for those who are grieving a loss. Grief is difficult at any time of year. It is doubly difficult at the holidays as those around us prepare to celebrate. This class, led by Rev. Wendy Fish and Kristin Guest, will offer support through sharing information on the grief process and connecting with others. There is no charge. Drop-ins are OK, but we prefer advance registration. We created a short survey that is intended to help us learn as much as possible about the groups we have at the church. The survey should only take 5–10 minutes of your time. Wednesday Younger Adult Spiritual CircleWednesday, Nov. 14 Gather with Intern Minister Mira for grounding and reflection, deeper sharing, and connecting to our own spiritual lives as well as others’ journeys. This will be an evolving program based on the needs and desires of the group and may include a reading, a song or two, personal check-ins, discussion of the monthly spiritual theme, and/or visits from other ministers and staff at the church. Join us for dinner ahead of time if you can!

This Year’s Holiday Give Drive BeginsJoin the Committee on Hunger and Homelessness (COHHO) in collecting gifts for the holiday party that Portland Homeless Family Solutions (PHFS) will host for their shelter families on Dec. 14. To make sure there are enough gifts for everyone, we have committed to donating a specific number of items, such as family movies, women’s bathrobes, slippers, and toiletry sets, and toddler toys. If you’d like to donate one or more of these requested items, stop by the COHHO cabinet next to the kitchen in Fuller Hall on November 18 or 25 to choose your items. Then drop them off at the COHHO cabinet on Nov. 25, Dec. 2 or Dec. 9. Alternatively, you can donate toys for any age; $10 gift cards to Regal Cinemas, Fred Meyer, Target, or Starbucks; or any dollar amount on Visa or Amazon gift cards. Just drop them off at our table.

Join Intern Minister Mira Mickiewicz, trans activists, and clergy from many faith traditions to remember and honor the trans people killed in anti-trans violence this year. Sunday, Nov. 18th at 2 pm at the First Methodist Church in Goose Hollow, just a ten-minute walk from First Unitarian. This will include a collaborative interfaith vigil with a reception afterward. Parents of Teens Support GroupConnect with other parents of teens to talk and share around parenting topics and the joys and challenges of navigating this phase of life as parents, with the guidance of a lay minister. We are an open group and parents are welcome to come as you are able. Childcare provided 15 minutes before an event. Soul Box NewsTo reach our ultimate goal of 4,000 by the end of January, we need to make 500 per month. We can’t do that with just the coffee hour, so our appeal is to you folks who support this. The Soul Box Project's goal is to display 36,000 boxes on Feb. 15 inside the Oregon State Capital (one box represents one person killed by gunfire in our country each year). Sound impossible? The SBP has already received over 22,000 boxes!
Participate by holding box-making parties at home, or set personal goals for yourselves. Bring your boxes to the Peace Action table any Sunday, or drop them off at the Church office on SW 13th during business hours. You can get instructions at the Peace Action table, or find them at Soulboxproject.org. MAKE A BOX, BRING IT IN: IT COUNTS.

We hold Kathryn Dailey Deaton and her new daughter, Astrid Rose Eisenbeis. Astrid was born on Oct. 8 and is doing well. Kathryn experienced extensive bleeding in the days following the birth and was in the hospital for several days. Her recovery is continuing.
Member Juanita Cook celebrates the birth of her grandchild. Naomi Rose Emry was born on Oct. 21. Her parents are Josh and Amy Emery, and her sister is Emily Emry. She brings joy to her family with her early but healthy arrival.

Immigrant Justice Action Group (IJAG)The Immigrant Justice Action Group (IJAG) has begun meeting the second Sunday of every month from 1:30–3 p.m. in Buchan Room 302. Our focus is on making connections, education, and action on immigrant justice. We offer quarterly educational meetings on topics of relevance to the congregation, focused on issues/needs of immigrant and refugee communities. Through the IJAG Google group, recommended actions are disseminated. Our meetings will include time for reflection, sharing, and an educational program about one of the many dimensions of the immigration challenge. We’ll also share opportunities for engagement and collaboration with our partners in the community and develop strategies and arrangements for our participation.
