ONLINE LEARNING EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES - AUGUST 2020
Dear Students and Parents,
These unprecedented times have called for all of us to adjust and adapt in the best interests of our students and the entire school community. We acknowledge the challenges presented by online learning, and our faculty/staff have worked tirelessly in preparing a virtual learning platform that is effective and accessible for all of our students that continues in the Brebeuf Jesuit tradition of academic excellence.
To ensure a positive, productive, and enjoyable learning experience, it is important that all students and parents/guardians adhere to these Online Learning Expectations, which include online etiquette for students and agreements from parents/guardians.
Students…
Preparing for online class is something to consider as intentionally as preparing for in-person class.
I AGREE:
- To identify and devote a space in your home for academic purposes. Make it be somewhere comfortable but where you can also focus and work.
- To have all materials, including a fully charged device, ready for class.
- To dress and comport yourself as if you are in person.
Practicing online etiquette is important in classrooms, just as in professional settings and many other aspects of life, during the current time especially.
I AGREE:
- To be present in the class, on time every day.
- To follow Brebeuf Jesuit’s expectations for behavior and your teacher’s instructions.
- To keep your camera live, so that you can participate live during class. Think of it as life preparation for business meetings now being handled online. (We recognize that there may be times when you have something private happening at home and we do not want to infringe upon that, so teachers will be understanding if you need your camera off occasionally or temporarily. But for the most effective participation, your default should be live on camera.)
Parents…
Your support at home (whether you are present at the time, or in preparation) is important to maintaining a learning environment that is an extension of the classroom.
I AGREE:
- To help my child to devote a consistent “space” for academic purposes.
- To help minimize any stimuli that may distract from the classroom.
- To please respect online learning as if the student is in person.
- To please notify and arrange with the attendance office all student absences from class, whether online or in person.
Your assistance in assuring confidentiality and focus for students and teachers during online learning is very important as well. All parents/guardians are asked to follow the following privacy guidelines.
I AGREE:
- Virtual classrooms are designed for students. Only students should join and participate live in class, not parents, please.
- Parents/guardians should try to allow students to fully engage with their virtual classrooms by limiting communication with students during class time. If you need to speak with your child during a check-in session, please ask the student to mute the microphone.
- If you as parent/guardian have a question, please email the student’s teacher. Know that they will probably not be able to reply right away, but we will be responsive as soon as possible after classes end.
