CERF Hosts Activities for High School Students with TRiO Upward Bound
|
Dinah Maygarden, Coastal Education Program Director for the Pontchartrain Institute for Environmental Sciences, has been busy at UNO’s Shea Penland Coastal Education and Research Facility (CERF). In partnership with UNO Birding and UNO TRiO Upward Bound, Maygarden recently led activities for local high school students over three weekends.
On March 4th, students were introduced to various native trees and plants that bird species utilize for food and shelter. In addition, students participated in activities related to water flow and salinity measures. On April 1, students canoed in the Bayou Sauvage estuary, learning about the unique geography of the area, its plant life, and the salinity of the estuary. On April 15, students learned about the migration and life cycle of Purple Martins and assisted in constructing gourd nesting at the CERF facility.
These activities are part of a grant through the US Fish and Wildlife Service Urban Bird Treaty Program. The Principal Investigator’s on the grant, UNO staff Liz (Uzee) Sigler (Biological Sciences alumna 1987) and John Bishop, helped lead activities at CERF and provided students with information on bird species encountered on their visits.
