Back Pack Ministry Offering and Men's Breakfast this Sunday!
                                                                                                           August 30, 2017
Throughout our 6-week series, "Rethink Miracles", we will be introducing you to some of the men and women who are served by Grace Place. For many of them, it was their first opportunity to have a portrait made. As you hear the stories they share, look for the face of God, look for the face of Grace, and look for ways you can be part of a miracle.
Lucio Martinez
I grew up in Cuba. I didn’t have any clothes, so I stole some and went to prison for it. They sent me to the United States. My deceased brother has taken over my body and mind. I take medicine for this now.
If I could send a message to anyone, what would it be? I need help right now.
My dreams are to get better and see my family again. I want to see my mother before she passes away. She’s in Cuba, and they won’t let me go back.
Grace Place adds: In 1981 Castro emptied Cuban jails and mental institutions and sent criminals and the mentally ill to Miami on boats. Lucio arrived in Miami on this flotilla. Miami, being overwhelmed with the refugees, sent many to other cities. Lucio was sent to St. Louis where, in a schizophrenic crisis he killed another homeless man. After a couple of years in prison, the State of Missouri pardoned Lucio and bought him a bus ticket to Jackson. He lives in shelters when he is on his medications and on the street during exacerbations of his schizophrenia.

Then, stay to experience our first
"Last Supper" program. Here are the details from Rev. Flowers:
WEDNESDAY re:treat NIGHT resumes tonight and we're adding a “retreat within the retreat”. The last Wednesday night gathering of every month, (August 30th, September 27th, October 25th, and November 15th),  will be an intergenerational time of fellowship, fun, and discussion. Classes will not meet on these nights (to give our teachers a break!) and we may even get home a little early. Our hope is that each "Last Supper" will aid us to learn more about one another and will also be a fun time of fellowship and growth. Each month will have a different theme; so if you can't commit to every Wednesday night, or if a Wednesday night class is not your thing right now, I hope you will make time to join us for the "Last Supper" each month so we can get to know one another better.
Tonight's theme: Birthdays and Baptism. After dinner we will get in groups by birthday month, share a little within our groups, play a game to see who thinks they know the most about Parkway Hills, and close with a reaffirmation of our baptismal covenant. See you tonight- Dawn
Meet our Newest Member!
Help us welcome Clara Herrington, daughter of Matthew and Molly Kirk! This sweet bundle of joy arrived last Friday, much to the delight of her three older siblings, Emily Kay, Cannon, and Adelaide! Some friends have put together a meal sign-up for the family; CLICK HERE if you would like to help the Kirks in this way. Congratulations to all!
Ladies Night Out
All women are invited to join us for dinner at Georgia Blue, Dutch treat, on Tuesday evening, September 5th at 6:30 pm. Please RSVP with Teresa Whitehead; we need a head count by this Friday, September 1st, in order to reserve seats at the restaurant. We will also staff the PHUMC nursery for complimentary childcare beginning at 6:00 pm if you RSVP your children. (Please send them with a sack dinner if they have not eaten.)
We'll relax and enjoy each other's company, as well as have time to plan some other women's activities for the year!
(Spoiler Alert: a new 6-week small group study, "Women Speak of God" is coming soon!)
The Food Pantry Needs Our Help
Our friends at MadCAAP report there are empty shelves in the Food Pantry!  Canned vegetables, tuna, canned pasta meals, spaghetti sauce, mac & cheese, and peanut butter & jelly are all desperately needed. They are open from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday through Wednesday, but they will stay open until 6:00 pm on Tuesdays to accept food donations.
Bring your donations to MadCAAP,
(directions here), or simply drop them off at church and we'll be happy to deliver them for you. Thanks!  We will continue to collect shoes, coats and clothing for Grace Place until our next visit, September 13th.
