Mt. Sopris: The Volcano That Never Was
by Donna Chase and Shauna Young
The iconic symbol of Carbondale, Mt. Sopris never fails to awe and inspire. Hundreds of photographs are taken every season and many RVR residents have hiked the summit. But, geologically speaking, our favorite mountain is often misunderstood. Here are a few factoids to help clarify:
-
Mt. Sopris is not a volcano. It is a laccolith which is an intrusion of magma that pushes up through layers of rock but does not come to the surface. The magma never erupts but crystallizes 10000 feet below the surface. Subsequent erosion over the past 30 million years has formed the mountain that we see today. Ice, wind and rock glaciers create the four cirques that are present. The cirques are now filled with rock and ice which move approximately 10”/year.
- Mt. Sopris is part of the Elk Mountain Range, the Maroon Bells/Snowmass Wilderness Area of the White River National Forest.
- Twin summits (east and west) are almost the same elevation (12965’) and are .8 km apart.
- Named after Richard Sopris (former mayor of Denver who was part of an expedition to the RFV)
- Significant that Sopris rises 6,400’ above the valley floor (by comparison, Maroon Peak rises only 4300’ above valley floor)--a push to rename after John Denver failed

Definitions: Laccolith—a mass of igneous rock that did not come to the surface but pushed into the overlying strata resulting in a dome like structure with a horizontal floor.
FYI: nearby volcanoes are Dotsero, Basalt Mtn., Triangle Mtn.

Green Tip | World Wildlife Day |
United Nations World Wildlife Day (WWD) is celebrated every year on March 3rd to appreciate wild animals and plants. It is a global event established to recognize and acknowledge the unique roles and contributions of wildlife to people and the planet. We rely on wildlife and biodiversity-based resources to meet our needs of food, fuel, medicines, housing, and clothing. This year’s WWD theme explores digital innovation in wildlife conservation. Advancements in tracking systems, real-time data analysis, and artificial intelligence-driven solutions are giving conservationists new tools to help identify, monitor, track, and ultimately preserve our wildlife. So let’s celebrate wildlife and the important conservation work being done around the world!
