This past week, students from RIT Performing Arts and NTID Department of Performing Arts attended the KCACTF Region 2 festival, a conference for theatre education: for students, staff, and faculty in higher education.
Attendees participated in design presentations, auditions, new play development programs, dramaturgy, workshops, and so much more!
For the second year in a row, Ace Gray won the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship. The top award for acting at the festival. Ace competed with a monologue from The Crucible by Arthur Miller and a scene from Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, with their scene partner, student Sarah Appel. Ace is Deaf and performed in ASL. They were nominated for the conference for their work in Peter and the Starcatcher. They are eligible to compete at the national conference at the Kennedy Center in April.
Alison Maselek won the LMDA/KCACTF Student Dramaturgy Award for her work on Concord Floral. This is the top award for dramaturgy at the festival. Ali is eligible to compete at the national conference at the Kennedy Center in April. Ali also won the Musical Theatre Initiative award. This is the top award for musical theatre at the festival. Ali is eligible to compete at the national conference at the Kennedy Center in April. Ali won for her performance of "Calm" from Ordinary Days.
Catherine Hampp won the Jay Duckworth Award for Properties for her work on the Difference Engine in Ada and the Engine. The award is named for the renown prop designer, who designed shows like Hamilton.
Emily Ohl received 2nd place for Costume Design for her work on Concord Floral.
Mac Leong received Honorable Mention for the DTM/RED Stage Management Championing Accessibility for Those On and Off Stage award for their caption design for Unstageably Fresh Gynt.
Pierre-Ilias Arzimanoglou was named runner up for the Open Jar Institute Dance Scholarship Award.

We are excited to welcome Robert Truan, Lecturer and Director of RIT Concert Bands to RIT's School of Performing Arts!
Previously, he was the Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga where he helped in all aspects of the music department. He completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting with a related field in Music Theory from the University of North Texas. His research, an analysis of Paquito D’Rivera’s Caribbean Berceuse (2021), was recently presented at an international theory conference in Prague, Czech Republic entitled, “Contemporary Music Theory: Approaches, Challenges, Limits.” He also presented pedagogical research at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in 2021. Dr. Truan graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Georgia in 2009, where he continued to complete his Master’s in Music Education in 2013.
