RSP 2026 Summer Grant Program
The 2026 – 2027 Grant-Related Instruction Faculty (GRIF) application period is now open in our InfoReady System. The GRIF appointment allows faculty who meet stringent eligibility requirements to receive a different classification for a year, and eligibility must be met each year through an application submission to receive this classification.

For your reference, here are the deadlines for GRIF applications this year:
- February 22, 2026 (optional) Pre-review from Research & Sponsored Programs (RSP)
- March 1, 2026: Submit application via InfoReady System sent to Department Chair with a copy to the Dean & RSP
- March 15, 2026: Chair submits their recommendation to Dean Via InfoReady
- April 1, 2026: Dean submits their Letter of Recommendation as an attachment to the provost through research@csun.edu with a copy to the applicant
- April 15, 2026: Decision of the Provost is communicated to the applicant by letter with copies to the College Dean and Department Chair.

Important notes:
1. External Grant Requirement and State Support
Faculty members’ grant and contract funds must buy out a minimum of twelve (12) units of assigned time to external grants at full cost during the 2026–2027 academic year. Facilities and Administrative (F&A) or indirect cost recovery funds shall not be used to support assigned time. The College Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) is responsible for ensuring that the grant is charged at full cost for these units. The service units, as designated under CSUN Section 600 policy, will be compensated with state funds.

2. Prohibited Uses of the Large Grant Program
GRIF recipients must not use the Large Grant Program to obtain additional assigned time or e-Funds during their GRIF appointment. The qualifying and expiration dates of the Large Grant Program shall not be extended, modified, or adjusted due to a recipient’s inability to use the program while on GRIF.

RSP 2026 Summer Grant Program
Application Deadline: By 5:00 p.m. PDT on Monday, March 30, 2026
The Research & Sponsored Programs (RSP) office is pleased to announce a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the 2026 Summer Grant Program. The purpose of the Summer Grant Program is to provide summer salary to support the development of a proposal for external funding, to be submitted through RSP as early as July 1, 2026, but no later than June 30, 2027. Complete applications must be submitted within the InfoReady system by the deadline. 

Interdisciplinary Faculty Research Project Development Initiative (I-FRPDI)

The Interdisciplinary Faculty Research Project Development Initiative (I-FRPDI) is a competitive, campus-wide funding opportunity that supports collaborative faculty teams in the development of major external grant proposals that advance CSUN’s academic mission, visibility, and long-term research capacity. Call for (Staff) Advisory Board Members: Ethnic Studies Center for RACE
The newly established Ethnic Studies Center for Research, Activism, and Community Empowerment (RACE) at CSUN is seeking a CSUN staff member to serve on its Inaugural Advisory Board. The Center for RACE advances Ethnic Studies through research, community collaboration, mentorship, and the implementation of AB 1460. The Center is committed to fostering equity, justice, and empowerment across local, diasporic, and transborder BIPOC communities.

We are seeking a CSUN staff member who:
- has a demonstrated record of advancing Ethnic Studies
- has demonstrated commitment to racial equity and student success
- has students (undergraduate or graduate) with involvement in Ethnic Studies, activism, or community-based work
- are community members engaged in racial and social justice efforts in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, or broader diasporic communities. 

Board Member Role Includes:
- A two-year renewable term
- Two meetings per semester
- Advising on programming, community engagement, and research initiatives
- Supporting the Center’s mission through vision and strategic guidance

2026 Jerome Richfield Memorial Fellow Announced
The Jerome Richfield Memorial Fellowship recognizes a CSUN faculty member engaged in high-quality, high-impact research. Each year, the Fellow is invited to present a lecture as part of the Provost’s Colloquium Series, which celebrates faculty scholarship and provides opportunities for engagement among faculty, administrators, students, and staff. Research and Sponsored Programs, with support from the Jerome Richfield Memorial Fund, is pleased to announce that the 2026 Jerome Richfield Memorial Fellow is Professor Daniela Gerson of the Department of Journalism.

A reception honoring Professor Gerson will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. Location will be provided upon registration. Registration is required as there is limited capacity. IRB Updates on Generative AI Use in Research
The CSUN Institutional Review Board (IRB) is currently exploring how the use of ChatGPT and other Generative AI tools may be reflected in research involving humans. As part of these ongoing discussions, IRB will begin including additional questions in the Cayuse IRB protocol inviting researchers to describe whether and how Generative AI tools are used in their research procedures and data analysis. Researchers may be asked to describe any anticipated risks or benefits from the use of Generative AI tools in their work. These questions are intended to better understand emerging research practices and are not meant to discourage the use of Generative AI in research.

To support researchers as these updates are implemented, IRB will host office hours during the Spring 2026 semester. Dates and times will be announced soon. These sessions will provide space to ask questions, receive guidance, and discuss how to appropriately disclose Generative AI use in IRB submissions.

Campus Feedback Requested: Proposed Center for Fintech Innovation and Policy
The David Nazarian College of Business and Economics is proposing a new academic center: the Center for Fintech Innovation and Policy. As part of the campus process for establishing a new center or institute, the draft charter is being shared with the campus community for a 30-day review and feedback period. The proposed Center would serve as a hub for inclusive fintech education, applied research, and policy engagement, with a focus on preparing students to understand and shape digital financial systems while strengthening CSUN’s research capacity and external funding in fintech and financial policy. Center activities would be organized around five pillars: (1) Student Development, (2) Digital Engagement (Webinars & Podcasts), (3) Skills-Based, Non-Credit Certifications, (4) Applied Research & External Funding, and (5) Industry-CSUN Connection. No degree programs or for-credit curriculum are proposed; the Center would focus on co-curricular, non-credit, and professional education.

Faculty Leadership Opportunity: MSI Humanities Leadership Academy
The Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions (CMSI) has launched the MSI Humanities Leadership Academy, a new leadership mentoring program for current and former humanities department chairs at MSIs, supported by a grant from the Mellon Foundation. The Academy is designed to strengthen the pipeline of humanities leaders by providing:
- Structured mentoring with experienced MSI academic leaders
- An intensive in-person leadership forum (early August)
- A year-long mentoring experience, including executive shadowing and virtual professional development

Participants will build skills in academic governance, budgeting, personnel management, and strategic decision-making, while strengthening their capacity to advocate for the humanities within institutional priorities. Learn more and apply. 

Grant Writing Support with Hanover Research
CSUN faculty can access personalized grant writing and proposal development support through our partnership with Hanover Research, at no cost to you. Hanover pairs PIs with experienced grant consultants who provide in-depth proposal review, editing, and strategic feedback, particularly helpful for revising submissions based on funder reviewer comments. After an initial consultation, proposals are placed in Hanover’s service queue, and written feedback is typically returned within 1–2 weeks of your agreed submission date.

Medtronic Minimed, in partnership with California State University, Northridge (CSUN), invites faculty to submit proposals for innovative research projects that advance diabetes care, technology, treatment accessibility, and patient-centered solutions. Diabetes remains one of the most pressing health challenges of our time. New Federal Requirement: Research Security Training for Covered Individuals
In accordance with the Chips and Science Act of 2022 (§10634), several federal research agencies, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Energy (DOE), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) are implementing new Research Security Training requirements for individuals participating in federally sponsored research.

To ensure compliance, the CSU Chancellor’s Office has released a Research Security Training module that meets federal standards outlined by the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The training will be offered via CSU Learn and cover key areas such as (1) Protecting research data and intellectual property, (2) International collaborations and disclosure requirements, (3) Cybersecurity and foreign travel best practices, and (4) Export control awareness. Completion of this training will be required for all individuals listed as senior/key personnel or covered participants on federally sponsored research proposals and awards prior to proposal submission. Hanover Workshop: National Institutes of Health: A Series of Opportunities
Through Hanover Research support, there is an opportunity to enroll in a learning workshop, “National Institutes of Health: A Series of Opportunities.” This course includes two primary components:
(1) An NIH introductory module designed to strengthen principal investigator (PI) competitiveness with NIH-specific resources, uncovering keys to success for prospective applicants. 
(2) A module on the NIH's most common R activity codes, intended to help PIs to decipher which R best fits their research goals, draft application components per Hanover’s recommendations for a competitive submission, and export a templated proposal draft. 

While the modules cover fundamentals of the NIH and several well-known R-series activity codes, along with many details, they are a distillation of extensive NIH content. This NOFO will develop, expand, and strengthen victim service programs for victims of all forms of human trafficking throughout the United States and its territories.
