March is National Nutrition Month®. Brown County FoodWIse celebrated the kick-off with an official proclamation by Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach and six St. John Ministries program participants. We celebrated with a Nutrition program that the Brown County FoodWIse team provided to St. John Ministries program participants. The FoodWIse team provided a Nutrition program with an eye-opening sugar measuring activity for various sweetened sugary beverages and a cooking demonstration at the STEM Innovation Center Kitchen Lab. To continue celebrating National Nutrition Month®, we ask our program participants what nutrition means to them. We collect their feedback and post it on a wall. So far, we have learned that nutrition means health, security, and appreciation for nutrition education.
Celebrate National Nutrition Month® by enjoying more fruits and vegetables, making half of your whole grains, and reducing your sugar intake; every bite counts, making the healthy choice easy. MyPlate. gov has great resources

FoodWIse taught four sessions at Chappell Elementary School in three 1st-grade classrooms. There were three classrooms with 18 to 20 students in each class. Through the Read for Health curriculum, students listened to books about the soil, planting, and how food gets from Farm to table. Along with the stories, we had discussions about the book, had an activity, and created a snack. Two activities the children enjoyed were planting peas to grow in the classroom and an experiment with seeds growing in a glove to see how roots begin. One teacher stated: “Students were eager to check the process/progress of their plants.” Another area students were eager to explore was the creation of different snacks and where the foods came from. Another teacher stated: “Students taking more initiative to eat a more balanced breakfast and lunch” and “Students compared their lunches and breakfast to Miss Julie’s snacks.” When preparing snacks, we were made aware of allergies. One teacher said, “Thank you for the opportunity to work with you, as well as the flexibility to substitute food for allergies.”

Brown County Seed Library
March 2nd was the second year of the launch of the Seed Library Party. Around 200 individuals attended this event. FoodWIse engaged with families, offering a story time of the book " A Fruit is a Suitcase for Seeds" by Jean Richards. Children matched seeds with their corresponding fruits in the seed ID activity.
The Brown County Seed Library is a curated collection of seeds – primarily edible plants – suited for success in our Northeastern Wisconsin growing region. These seeds are available free of charge to anyone interested in planting vegetables, fruits, and pollinator-friendly plants.

FoodWIse has a multilevel engagement with Danz Elementary School. In the coming months, we will deliver nutrition education to nine classrooms. Last month, we concluded two series in collaboration with the Danz Boys and Girls Club afterschool program. Our multilevel engagement connects with students and their caregivers. FoodWIse invited caregivers and their children for a one-time nutrition session. Families learn and have fun participating in a Jeopardy nutrition game, and they were amazed to find out how much added sugar is in some drinks. Families leave with skills and knowledge that will empower them to make healthier choices for their well-being.
