Brown County FoodWIse 2023 |
|
Hello, my name is Laurel May, and I am a student in the MS Nutrition and Integrated Health program at UWGB and intern with UW-Extension FoodWIse. To me, food represents fuel for the body and brain, comfort, and connection to loved ones and places. My personal belief in the power of food was strengthened as an undergraduate student studying community health. I learned how knowledge of and access to healthy food options can affect a person’s health status and long-term disease risk. As a future registered dietician, the ability to help clients navigate barriers that prevent access to healthy options will be essential. Interning at FoodWIse has introduced me to new local resources and given me the opportunity to work with several passionate nutrition educators.

ONEIDA NATION COOKING PROGRAM |
FoodWIse program collaborated with the Oneida Nation Food Distribution program, the Oneida Nation Pantry, and the Oneida UW-ADRC program to provide three nutrition education programs to the participants of the Alzheimer's Prevention Program. The program place emphasis on making Indigenous recipes. The recipes included autumn squash soup, venison vegetable soup, and Spinach and Wild Rice Salad W/ walnut chive vinaigrette. The participants enjoyed their time together and gained information to recognize the importance of whole grains in the diet. They learned to identify whole grain foods in ingredient lists, examine the source, and use credible food and nutrition information.

| GROWING TOGETHER WITH KELLER GARDEN |
FoodWIse participated in the first harvest celebration at Keller Elementary School Garden. The garden received funds from the FoodWIse Growing Together grant. 4th and 5th graders planted the garden; the garden is currently growing potato plants, radishes, beans, tomatoes, herbs, and as its pollinator raised bed. Some of the produce was distributed to the House of Hope. We are excited about this great partnership and looking forward to the upcoming harvest dates. Check Keller and FoodWIse's Facebook pages for the coming dates.
