Monthly Highlight:
PEER Rapid Response Projects |
PEER Rapid Response studies support MNPS by providing evidence to help address pressing questions of policy and practice within a relatively short period, typically within six months.

Tiered Intervention Platforms |
To ensure every student has the individualized supports they need to succeed academically, MNPS has leveraged ESSER funds to invest district-wide in a set of skills-based interventions in literacy and numeracy. These interventions are utilized during Personalized Learning Time for students in grades K-9.
Through the PEER Rapid Response process, researchers explored how these intervention platforms are working to improve students’ literacy and numeracy and presented their findings to District leadership earlier this year.

“MNPS makes significant investments in interventions to serve our students. The PEER Rapid Response project has aided me in thoroughly assessing the degree to which each intervention is effective in different contexts. This allows the Support Hub to align our work such that the interventions are more likely to be effectively implemented and supported well, which ultimately improves outcomes for students.”

The focused evaluation of five interventions included Lexia Core 5, Lexia Power Up, I-Ready Math, Language Live, and S.P.I.R.E. Research findings suggested where these interventions are working well—for which schools, and for which students.

Navigator Program Implementation |
| First piloted in the 2020-21 school year, Navigator aims to connect every student in MNPS to a caring adult who serves as their mentor, advocate, and advisor.
Through the Rapid Response process, a research team from Vanderbilt interviewed Navigators at schools with varying levels of implementation quality. The findings from this study led to several changes in program practice for the 2023-2024 school year, including streamlining the check-in platforms and refining the program's system of accountability and supports.

Through a University of MNPS Partnership, Metro Schools students can apply for scholarships to attend Fisk University, Lipscomb University, Tennessee State University, Nashville State Community College, or Belmont. These scholarships provide full tuition, room, board, books, and fees for four academic years (eight semesters) of continuous study.
PEER's newest rapid response project seeks to understand under what conditions students receiving scholarships are and are not matriculating to college.

Shoutout: MNPS Student, Shanya Mirza |
Shanya Mirza is a senior at Stratford High School, one of PEER's partner schools, who recently received a full scholarship to Vanderbilt University through the QuestBridge Program. On behalf of the PEER team, we congratulate Shanya on this milestone achievement and wish her well in her studies at Vanderbilt next year!

Post-pandemic, historically high student absenteeism rates are still affecting student academic performance and school culture, especially in schools serving higher percentages of economically disadvantaged students. Chronic absenteeism is improving, but only marginally. Schools face the challenge of identifying the root causes of chronic absenteeism and reestablishing a culture of school attendance.
The PEER working group on chronic absenteeism is currently exploring root causes and opportunities to address this issue in MNPS schools.
