The evolving COVID-19 pandemic poses a particular threat to people experiencing homelessness, many of whom are already in poor health and immunocompromised. Health Care for the Homeless providers are working diligently to care for this vulnerable population in clinics, shelters, encampments, and streets across the U.S. as the outbreak continues.
The Health Care for the Homeless Network (HCHN) of Public Health – Seattle & King County is at the forefront of these efforts. Statement from the Council: Dangerous Opportunity

| It has often been pointed out that the Chinese word for “crisis” is composed of two characters. The first means “danger” and the second is “opportunity.” Thousands of years ago, their culture contained the wisdom that with very crisis, there is also opportunity.
In March 2020, “COVID-19” is virtually synonymous with danger as people in this country and around the world are warned to stay at home, stand at least six feet apart, go into quarantine for fourteen days, be aware of the risk factors for the elderly, practice self-care in response to trauma, and the #1 recommendation of the CDC: wash your hands thoroughly and often. Apply for an Immediate Impact Grant by 5 p.m. CT on March 30 to Help Your Organization Serve People Without Homes in the COVID-19 Pandemic

| Kaiser Permanente and the National HCH Council are accepting applications for unrestricted funds for 501(c)(3) organizations in specific areas that are meeting the health needs of people experiencing homelessness in the COVID-19 pandemic. Funds ranging from $25,000-$50,000 will be awarded to eligible organizations in Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, and the District of Columbia.
Organizations must apply using our online form by 5 p.m. CT on March 30. We will email grant recipients on April 8, and checks will go out shortly afterward. Contact us with questions or call Sen. Dir. of Advancement Dott Freeman between 9 a.m.-4 p.m. CT at (207) 333-8877.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released interim guidance for responding to COVID-19 among people experiencing unsheltered homelessness. This guidance provides information and actions for health departments, homeless service organizations, housing authorities, and others serving people without homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Crisis and Innovation: Medical Respite Care Providers Respond to Novel Coronavirus

In Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Boston, programs have implemented daily temperature checks and screenings for current medical respite clients and ongoing monitoring of symptoms. They are developing new workflows and staffing patterns to respond to positive screenings and the necessity of quarantining and isolation plans. People experiencing homelessness survive on the streets with the help of community support. The COVID-19 crisis has disrupted this support, and people are struggling to meet their needs, particularly while businesses are shut down ... Communities must consider the needs of people experiencing homelessness and find ways to meet them during this crisis.
