Jewish Studio Project & Hebrew College Open New Creativity Studio on Our Shared Newton Campus
During this sacred time in the Jewish calendar, amidst the intensity and heartbreak of this year, Jewish Studio Project (JSP)and Hebrew College are partnering to bring new possibilities to the Greater Boston community. This September, JSP will open a new Studio in collaboration with and on the shared campus of Hebrew College. This unique partnership, which has been in formation for years, is the first-of-its-kind, integrating a multi-modal creative process studio on a shared community campus and rabbinical school, just steps off the belt midrash.
JSP was founded on the core belief that each of us is created creative. JSP supports individuals, organizations and communities in cultivating creativity as a Jewish practice for spiritual connection and social transformation. JSP truly began in the Hebrew College beit midrash when then-rabbinical student Adina Allen experimented with bringing the art-making practices she grew up with in her mother’s studio to text study as tools to process and interpret Torah.
Hebrew College offered a generative environment for exploration and innovation, one that was crucial to JSP’s founding. Rabbi Adina 14 writes in her new book The Place of All Possibility about the ways rabbinical school served as a living laboratory to experiment with new ways of approaching text and tradition.
“We are honored and inspired to partner with JSP and to launch a new Boston studio here on the Hebrew College shared campus. Faithful creativity is at the heart of our shared work," said Hebrew College President, Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld. "In a time of narrowing imagination, JSP invites us to explore the untapped possibilities that live within us, to experience the sheer joy of creativity, and to listen deeply for the layered resonance of ancient words. We are excited to see the ways in which this JSP-Hebrew College partnership opens new doors of possibility for our community.”

A Season of Sephardic Culture on Campus
Hebrew College invites you to spend the Fall of 2024 steeped in Sephardic culture with a season of exhibits, courses, and events exploring the legacy of Spain’s Medieval Jewish community. As our Me’ah travelers learned last spring on a trip to Spain, the historical tension between Spanish Jewry’s vibrant culture and abruptly forceful conclusion continues to shape Jewish life today. This is evident in the array of Hebrew College cultural and learning experiences this fall, each offering its own way to connect with the legacy of Sepharad (medieval Spain).

“Introduction to Conversion” or “Introduction to Judaism?”
By Rabbi Dan Judson, PhD, Hebrew College Provost
I served as a congregational Rabbi for many years and every year my synagogue held an annual event: a panel of members who converted to Judaism would talk about their journeys to becoming Jewish. One year, a congregant who I had asked to join the panel told me they were honored to be asked but said they wanted to beg off because we had already honored them so much for their conversion, they did not need another honor in being to be on the panel. I should ask another person who might like the honor. I responded by saying they misunderstood. Speaking on the panel was not to honor those who converted, although it was great if they felt honored. The panel was not for the converts, it was for congregants who were born into Judaism.

It makes sense that when we feel less safe and secure, we might, as a way to survive, focus only on what is right for us. I am comforted by this parashah’s nonjudgmental acknowledgment of this. At the same time, I am bolstered by its pull for us to imagine a different reality: a reality in which we can take a deep breath, where we feel safe and protected, where we can rest easily, and be able to see beyond our own immediate needs and relate to the divine and those around us with a sense of obligation towards them.
