The Sacred and the Secular: Tamid Course and Trip Explore Jewish Life in Central Europe
By Rabbi Leonard Gordon, D. Min., Tamid of Hebrew College Me'ah Instructor
Central Europe was the cradle and center of Ashkenazi Jewish civilization until the 13th and 14th centuries. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, as Jews grappled with the new challenges presented by emancipation and freedom, the German speaking Jewish communities evolved new models of Jewish living, laying the groundwork for the development of the Reform, Conservative and Modern Orthodox movements. The Nazis and their allies destroyed the Jewish communities of Austria, Czechoslovakia and Hungary, but their legacies are still alive and relevant in contemporary Jewish life. I look forward to exploring and tracing the story of Ashkenazi Jewry on Tamid of Hebrew College’s next travel learning experience, where we will use the major centers of Prague, Vienna and Budapest to remember and learn about the past and to better understand the complex nature of our own contemporary Jewish identity, belief and practice...

The Prophecy of Writer's Block
By Rabbi Joey Glick '22, Assistant Rabbi at Congregation Shir Tikvah in Minneapolis, MN
It is the season of rabbinic writer’s block. Each year, those of us who give sermons for the High Holidays jump on to WhatsApp groups and listservs, commiserating about the pressure and challenge of speaking our truth during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. This year, the task feels harder than ever. As we speak to a community rocked by the events of October 7th, the ongoing devastation in Gaza, rapidly spreading violence throughout the Levant, and the upcoming U.S. election, many of us are struggling to know how best to use our voices. While we rabbis have a particular challenge, we are not alone. It seems like everyone in my life is struggling to answer the questions and pains of friends, students, and children. What words could possibly bring us towards consolation, justice, and power in this painful season?

Halal, Hillul, and the Shared Meanings of Hebrew and Arabic
Halal is the term for food that is “kosher” under Islamic law—while its apparent Hebrew cognate, ḥillul (חִלּוּל), means “profanation.” Can they be connected? Jewish texts are composed in Hebrew (sometimes in combination with Aramaic); direct access to them, rather than in translation, affords much greater depth to our understanding of them. And occasionally, attention to Hebrew yields insights about linguistic and conceptual connections between Judaism and other faiths.

Shul Lunch Co-op at Hebrew College
Stop by our shared campus during the lunch hour and you'll hear the laughter and smell the aroma of the Shul Lunch Co-op at work, preparing nutritious, sustainable, kosher meals for the community.
A recent fundraising effort has allowed them to start the year with momentum: "We're so grateful to the nearly 100 people who made donations (some of them multiple donations) to the Co-op last year!" says Co-op founder David Mahfouda.
The boost in funds has doubled their membership to nearly 60. David continues: "We are also about to hire a new Co-op Coordinator, Jake Waksbaum, and Ritual Director, Becca Heisler (also a Co-op Co-founder) — so we're poised to grow physically as well as spiritually. We have new! knives! — which our cooking squads are eternally grateful for. And last but not least, it feels really good to have lunch together — a reminder (wink wink) that we'd love to have lunch with you at Hebrew College in the near future."

IN MEMORIAM: David Hoffman z"l
Hebrew College deeply mourns the passing of David Hoffman z"l on September 24, 2024. "David’s dedicated work on behalf of Hebrew College has been tireless and transformative, and his impact will be enduring. He has been a valued trustee of Hebrew College, a friend to so many in our community, and together with his beloved wife Beryl, a devoted adult learner," said Hebrew College President Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld.
David was treasurer of the Hebrew College Board of Trustees, a Hebrew College Tamid adult learning student (along with his wife), and an active member of the Hebrew College Strategic Planning team who helped to implement the recommendations of the resulting plan. The College honored him at our annual Spring 2024 Gala.
