WELCOME AUSTIN KLEMAN, nSJ TO BREBEUF
Brebeuf Jesuit is blessed to have Austin Kleman, nSJ join our community.
Austin, a Jesuit novice who will be with us until early May, graduated with honors from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in Psychology and Philosophy.
During his studies, Austin participated in a missionary program in Uganda, Africa, and an internship program with the Lasallian brothers in Brisbane, Australia. After graduating college, Austin worked as the General Manager of a Dunkin’ restaurant in his hometown, Wausau, Wisconsin for just over a year.
Austin first discovered the Jesuits in his final year at Saint Mary’s and spent his time at Dunkin' learning about the order and discerning the call to join. He entered the Novitiate in St. Paul, MN on August 15, 2020. Austin is planning to profess his first vows on August 13, 2022, and then begin a Master's in consciousness, ethics, and artificial intelligence.
Austin will utilize his talents in the classroom with the Social Studies and Religious Studies departments, and outside the classroom by supporting the Campus Ministry and Community Service offices. Next time you are in the building or attending a Track and Field event (as Austin will be assisting there, too!) be sure to say hello and welcome him to our community.
We asked Austin what he was most looking forward to as he begins his tenure at Brebeuf, and he said:
"What I am most looking forward to about being here at Brebeuf is experiencing what it means to be a member of a Jesuit school, while still maintaining a sense of individuality that keeps Brebeuf unique. Many schools have the Jesuits backing them up, but in my first two weeks here, I have already seen how Brebeuf takes being a Jesuit school to a whole new level and is not only a Jesuit school, but is specifically Brebeuf Jesuit."

ONLINE CHINESE EXCHANGE DISCUSSIONS
Despite the pandemic and quarantine policy in Taiwan (2-week stay at a quarantine hotel after all visitors' arrival in Taiwan), Mrs. Dwyer's Chinese classes still managed to have a cultural exchange with vibrant discussions via Google Meet with students from HSNU (The Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University) in Taipei, Taiwan.
Brebeuf students worked on a video project to share how they celebrated Thanksgiving (origin, food, activities, decorations) at home. Then, HSNU students watched these videos on the Brebeuf Chinese program Youtube channel, and students from both schools finally "met" on Google Meet for live conversations about Thanksgiving and beyond.
A special shoutout to students in Chinese 4+5 Class, who used Chinese during the entire discussion session. Students had a great time meeting native speakers of Chinese and sharing different ideas. They will meet HSNU students again in February to talk about how people in Taiwan celebrate Chinese New Year.

STUDENT AP RESEARCH SURVEYS
Next week, Assistant Principal Mrs. Blakey will invite all Brebeuf students to participate in data collection for Brebeuf Jesuit's AP Research class.
Students in AP Research have been tasked with conducting an in-depth investigation of a topic of their choosing. To conduct this year-long investigation, students will be using research and inquiry methods to collect, synthesize, and analyze data that will culminate in an academic research paper. Some students have elected to give surveys to collect data on their topic and are asking for help from the Brebeuf community. Participation in these surveys will help the students to achieve desired sample sizes of their targeted populations and give them the data necessary to complete their investigations. The research and surveys that will be sent have gone through the Internal Review Board (IRB) and meet federal requirements for privacy and data destruction.
Participation in any and all surveys and/or research is fully voluntary.
If you have any questions, please contact Assistant Principal Erika Blakey at eblakey@brebeuf.org.

CANCER AWARENESS NIGHT
Hello, Brebeuf Fans!
The Girls and Boys Basketball teams would like to invite you to celebrate with us on a special GOLDEN NIGHT on January 28! That evening, while the Braves battle the Trojans of Chatard High School, we would like to take the evening to celebrate all those individuals we know and love who are or have previously battled cancer as part of our Cancer Awareness Night.
As part of our evening, we invite all our fans to wear gold to the game. To show their support, the basketball teams will be wearing special yellow warm-up shirts and shoelaces to remember the survivors and victims of pediatric cancer. In addition to this, the basketball teams would like to recognize any Brebeuf students who may be battling cancer or who are themselves survivors of cancer. If you would like to be a part of this celebration, please reach out to Sam Glowinski at SGlowinski@brebeuf.org.
In addition, the basketball teams will be raising money to donate towards pediatric cancer research and treatment.
Finally, we invite all fans in attendance to fill out a special sign that will be available at the doors to honor all those we know who have battled cancer.

weekly community covid dashboardBelow is this week's update.
It is encouraging to see a lower COVID-positive number this week than last week, though it is still elevated. We continue our precautions of requiring masks indoors and adapting some large-group events at this time. We experienced more faculty/staff absences last week, but through other colleagues pitching in, we remain confident in being able to offer in-person school every day, which is our primary focus.
