Inside The Spartan Spotlight
| |
Dear De La Salle Families,
What a whirlwind it has been, the month of August! As we pause to give thanks for the social and economic gifts that American labor has provided to our country and world, on behalf of the entire faculty and staff, we extend our best wishes and warmest appreciation for your partnership. With so much going on in our world (the tragic loss of lives of American soldiers and countless others in Afghanistan, raging fires in Tahoe and elsewhere, hurricanes, and more), we honor the commitment of so many to make our lives and this education possible. VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC LIFE LETTER
| |
Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, and Friends of De La Salle,
You will have heard a lot from De La Salle teachers and administrators by the end of today between our Back-to-School Night, videos, and spotlight messages. I want to reiterate here what I communicated in Mr. Holquin’s and my welcome video: namely, our intentional focus this year is on community. As St. John Baptist de La Salle taught us: we cannot learn without relationships. That is why he frequently focused writings not only on teachers, but also on the student-teacher relationship. Overnight Trip Rapid Antigen Testing Overnight travel for sports, retreats, and other field trips has resumed. To ensure the safety of all, as well as comply with many of the host sites’ COVID-19 policies, every person involved (students, faculty, staff, and chaperones), regardless of vaccination status, must complete a COVID-19 test the day prior to the event. Antigen testing will be provided at De La Salle the day before the departure date. All individuals attending the event must test. If you are unable to attend the testing at school, you can get Antigen testing done at an approved lab or a testing center and provide results prior to leaving. At-home test kits will not be allowed at this time. Parent consent forms will be distributed to all students intending to travel.
Vaccination Status Families are encouraged to share their son's vaccination status with the school, as this will help with tracing and quarantine protocols, should there be a positive test. If the status remains undisclosed, we will assume that the student is not vaccinated. Upload student vaccine status through SchoolAdmin. Click “view checklist” to access where to upload documentation.
Close Contact Procedure Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) has implemented new standards for what qualifies as close contact in K-12 educational settings. View our COVID-19 Resources page for details and the steps students will be asked to take if close contact with an individual that tests positive for COVID-19 occurs based on vaccination status.

The 21st Annual De La Salle Cereal Drive will run from Monday, September 20 through Friday, October 8. De La Salle will use a hybrid model for donations this year. Students will be able to bring boxes of cereal to school, or financial donations can be made online. The online donation form will be available on September 20.
This year's Cereal Drive will support the Monument Crisis Center of Concord. De La Salle donated more than $16,000 to the Monument Crisis Center last year, purchasing more than 8,000 boxes of cereal for families in need. Additionally, the Cereal Drive will be a competition between Community Time rooms (6th period). Students can drop off/bring cereal to the Hofmann and/or their 6th-period classrooms.

Thank you to the many families in the De La Salle community who have already participated with a gift to the De La Salle Annual Fund this year. Whether a one-time or monthly gift or pledge, your support has already made a tremendous impact this year as we resume full, in-person learning!
As you can agree, the De La Salle community is a special one, and we have missed over a year “being in community with each other” as our Founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle would say. Over the coming weeks leading up to De La Salle Giving Day on Tuesday, October 12, students, alumni, faculty, and parents will share through our numerous social media channels their sentiments of what makes De La Salle the exceptional community it is. Be on the lookout and celebrate our wonderful community with us.
If you have not had an opportunity to support the Annual Fund this year, De La Salle Giving Day on Tuesday, October 12 or anytime leading up to Giving Day, would be a great day to show your support for our students and community.
One Day. One Community. Our Community + Your Investment = Their Future
Your investment in the Annual Fund assures our ability to build community with our students. Your gifts and intentions are heartedly appreciated. Visit www.dlshs.org/givenow to make your gift today. Have a question about your participation in the Annual Fund? Contact Karla Wiese at 925.288.8195 or wiesek@dlshs.org.

Registration for AP Testing Now Open
De La Salle High School, in conjunction with College Board, offers Advanced Placement (AP) programs that present college-level curricula and examinations to high school students. American colleges and universities often grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores on the examinations.
If your son is taking an AP class, it is expected that he sign up for the AP test, which will take place in the first two weeks in May. You will need to pay for each individual test your son will take. Your son will also need to register for their AP classroom with their teacher. Please note while signing up whether or not your son is taking Physics 1 or Physics C, also Calculus AB or Calculus BC.
Registration and payment for AP Testing are due by October 8, 2021.
