A Strong Showing from Academy Students at Mass MoCA

What an incredible showing of artistic talent at Mass MoCA’s 8th Annual Teen Invitational! We are glowing with pride to share that Lilah F won a grand prize finalist award, and Emily C, Izzy B, Lila G, Chessie R-C, Leni S-F, Solly C and Elisa R all won gold medal awards! These students all earned our school a significant donation for the art department, as well as year-long family memberships for themselves (plus some extra goodies for the grand prize finalist). Congratulations to all who submitted - this was a great first year for our participation in this event, and we look forward to more strong contributions next year!

Spirit Week - Hosted by The Health and Wellness Council

The community celebrated Academy Spirit with a different theme for each day this week. The goal of Spirit Week was to boost the amount of school spirit as the year begins to come to a close. It allowed for students to dress up and have an exciting lead up to the semi-formal dance. Monday, students wore Academy gear, Tuesday they dressed as super heroes, Wednesday was match day where students picked a person with whom to coordinate clothing, Thursday was class color day and Friday was pajama day in honor of  the semi formal dance that night. Most of the school participated and it was great fun!

SPORT RECAP, Week of May 14

The high school Ultimate teams had a long afternoon of games in the River Valley Athletic League Tournament on Wednesday. The Varsity team came out a little cold for game one against White Oak, lost the game in an upset, but proceeded to win against Buxton and later BART. Perhaps the best game of our season was played against the Putney School, which ended in an 8-9 loss after a 'universe point' that lasted for nearly five minutes. Throughout the day the Varsity squad exhibited strong, cohesive defense, scores of hard-fought offensive points, and excellent teamwork. The JV team, who had also faced a tough Eaglebrook team on Monday, played hard all afternoon long, but was unable to come out with any victories. Regardless, they demonstrated significant improvement and approached the afternoon with a wonderful spirit.  Thank you to all of the fans who came out to support our players.

On Wednesday, the kayakers spent the entire day out on the river as they celebrated the culmination of a season's worth of work. Several students attempted to paddle the Zoar Gap, and a few made it through successfully!

Also on Wednesday, the middle school Ultimate team held on to win 12-9 in their season finale against a competitive Four Rivers squad at Greenfield Community College. Nick F and Anna P-C scored five and three times, respectively, and Atticus R had two goals and three assists.  Charlie P was sensational on defense and Elisa R had her strongest game yet.  Leo W, competing for the first time all season, also scored a goal and played well on both offense and defense.

Girls lacrosse lost two tough games this week against Miss Halls and Pittsfield JV. Sarah H played well in goal, Lizzie H led the scoring attack in both games, and Ella D had two strong defensive games to conclude her Academy lacrosse career.

Junior Hopes to Build an Outdoor Bread Oven

Chessie R-G '19 writes, "In Environmental Science I am working on a project to construct an outdoor bread oven for our school. The oven will help us learn about sustainability (specifically about sustainable food/eating). Hopefully it will become a great community center for the school. I am fundraising in order to buy the materials for construction. My goal is $500. All donations will go to cover materials.*

You can donate and also find out more about the project at this link.
*The donation page is open and $325 of the $500 goal has already been collected. The campaign will only receive funds if its goal of $500 is met by June 2. Please donate!
