Ward 3 newletter header

Message from Trustee Gough

Dear Ward 3 Resident,
Welcome back to the new school year! I hope you and your family had an enjoyable summer and your child is settling in well to the routines of school. A special welcome to all new parents who are joining this e-newsletter for the first time.
I hold frequent ward-wide meetings on topics of interest to parents. Don't miss the first meeting, on October 2 at 7 pm at Karen Kain School of the Arts. The topic is timely: with the provincial government releasing a controversial rewrite of the 1998 Health and Physical Education curriculum, and many parents confused, I will host an update on how human development (sex ed) will be taught in TDSB schools. Details below.
As your elected school board trustee for TDSB, my role is to advocate for you and your child, and to represent the needs and interests of all students and parents in the TDSB. Please visit my website for lots of good information on local education matters.
Your involvement with your child's education is important. There are many ways to get involved. Explore the TDSB Ward 3 Essential School Community Resource Guide that local parents created to share their tips. The TDSB's award-winning website is also a wealth of information. Check out the Parent Resources website for homework tips, the school year calendar, and supports for mental health, healthy living, and bullying.
For years, I have advocated for safer roads in school zones so that students can walk and cycle safely to school, thereby experiencing many health and resiliency benefits. Because of motions that I have made and successfully received support for, road safety and active transportation is now on the radar screen of the TDSB as never before. More information is below.

David Hornell JS Adopt a School program with Indigo

David Hornell Jr. School in Mimico has joined the Indigo Adopt a School program, with the goal of having 237 new books donated to the school's aging library collection. Last year's school budget allowed only $16 per student to buy new books. The Indigo program allows people to donate between September 15- October 7, 2018. Please consider donating via the Indigo Adopt a School website

Playground revitalizations Lanor, Islington and Twentieth

I am happy to report that over the summer, major playground upgrades have taken place at Lanor Jr. Middle School, Islington Jr. Middle School, and Twentieth Street Jr. School. Thank you to Richard Christie and his team in TDSB Sustainability for all their work.

PIAC Ward 3 representative needed!

Many thanks to Ward 3's outgoing Parent Involvement Advisory Committee (PIAC) representative Trevor Burnett of Seventh Street JS, who was outstanding. Felicia Seto-Lau, our current PIAC representative, is looking for a new PIAC Alternate
PIAC is a group of parents who are engaged in their community and child(ren)’s school and want to learn and work together with other TDSB parents and community groups to improve student achievement and well being. It is enriching and enjoyable to interact with other members of PIAC! Making connections with other parents throughout the city and learning how they are involving parents and the community in our schools to improve achievement and student well-being is very rewarding.
Reach Felicia at mamafaves@hotmail.com or join her for a coffee chat about PIAC - Tuesday September 25, 9:30- 10:30 am, at Side Note Cafe in Mimico, 2461 Lake Shore Blvd. West.

News and Updates from TDSB's Education Centre

Road Safety and Active Transportation: October is I-Walk Month at TDSB

The TDSB is rolling out a plan to teach safe pedestrianism and to encourage walking and biking to school, starting with International Walk to School Month in October and International Walk to School Day on October 3rd. For ideas to plan and promote a walk to school event, please visit the International Walk to School Month website. Schools that register with Ontario Active School Travel will be eligible to receive a certificate of participation as well as posters and stickers.

TDSB and City expanding Vision Zero traffic measures in school zones

TDSB staff are working closely with the City of Toronto's Transportation Services to improve road safety for school aged children, aligning with Toronto's Vision Zero Road Safety Plan- a five year, $108 M plan to reduce the number of traffic-related deaths and serious injuries. As part of this plan, 88 schools across the city will get new road safety "gateway features" to slow down drivers in the school zone. The schools are being chosen based on a rating scale, with the schools that have roads deemed most unsafe getting first priority.

EQAO results

The Education Quality and Accountability Office has released results for the TDSB tests written in the academic year that ended in June. Results showed that although achievement in reading and writing is generally excellent to good at the Grades 3 and 6 levels, more work needs to be done in raising mathematics achievement. More details about EQAO results are available on the TDSB website.
