Johns Hopkins APL Marks 15 Impactful Years of Pushing the Boundaries of Missile Design

For 15 years, APL has been advancing a new paradigm for missile design, known as multidisciplinary design optimization, that overcomes the limitations of traditional processes. Along the way, the Laboratory has developed cutting-edge tools that have supported a wide range of government agencies and advanced the state of the art among industry partners and government sponsors.

Mission specialists were calibrating the star cameras, used to determine the direction of pointing of the telescope.

GUSTO Mission Breaks NASA Record for Longest Flight by Heavy Lift Balloon

NASA’s balloon mission GUSTO broke the record for the longest flight time by a heavy lift, long-duration balloon on Feb. 24, topping the previous record holder, which lasted for 55 days, 1 hour and 34 minutes. The new record is 57 days, 7 hours.

APL’s Will Coon, a sleep scientist and neural signals engineer, serves as principal investigator for work to develop a smart tool that employs a brain-like artificial neural network to monitor an individual’s sleep in real time.

APL Tackles Military Sleep Deprivation With Innovative Smart Tool

The Lab's high-tech solution to combat sleep problems in the military monitors and enhances sleep in real time, potentially boosting overall health and cognitive abilities.

APL has joined the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium, the first such group dedicated to promoting the development and deployment of artificial intelligence technologies with an emphasis on safety, reliability and ethical standards.

Lunar Surface Innovation Consortium (LSIC) Spring Meeting

Tuesday, April 23 – Thursday, April 25 • APL Kossiakoff Center

This spring, LSIC will engage the community on how to get back to the Moon together. The meeting will include NASA’s plans and updates, infusion paths, partnerships, current technology investments and more, and will feature invited speakers, panels, focus areas discussions, lightning talks and posters. Registration for in-person attendance is open until April 7. Virtual attendance registration is open through April 14.

Lab Wins Regional Design Award for ‘Revolutionary’ Research Facility

APL received a 2023 Excellence in Design Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Baltimore. APL earned the honor in the Institutional Architecture category for the design of one of the Laboratory’s newest state-of-the-art research and development centers: Building 201.

APL’s Building 201 was honored for excellence in architecture.

APL’s Andersen Elected to AIAA Board of Trustees

APL systems engineer Nancy Andersen has been elected to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) board of trustees as an at-large member.

Nancy Andersen, systems engineer and assistant program manager in APL’s Asymmetric Operations Sector, has been elected an at-large member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics board of trustees.
