Ravenwood High School student climbs to summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro
By Coleman Bomar • Staff Writer
In January, Ravenwood High School student Aayush Kumar completed a life-changing journey. He summited Mt. Kilimanjaro after a seven-day trek alongside his father, Avinash.
The 17-year-old Eagle Scout started a GoFundMe and raised money for three non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as part of his trip, Pack for a Purpose, Neema Foundation and CARE USA, which provide support to underprivileged communities in Tanzania, Moshi.
Aayush and Avinash trained for weeks to climb Kilimanjaro. They hiked the mountain for five to seven hours daily for seven days straight. The air pressure at such high elevations prevented the pair from walking more than seven hours per day as it exhausted their bodies.

A warrior is born in Franklin
By Elicia Hyder for the Williamson Herald
Kelly Herrick didn’t know anything was wrong until she saw the blood. There was no pain, no contractions, but her water broke within seconds.
Just after midnight, on Feb. 12, 2023, Herrick was only four days into the third trimester of her pregnancy when her mother, Carol Moore, delivered her new grandson on the bathroom floor. Williamson County dispatcher Austin Cummings coached them through the delivery over the 911 call.
“Austin was really the calm in the storm. I don’t think he even realizes how much he helped us,” Herrick said.
But the 27-week-old baby wasn’t breathing.
