As we celebrate 135 years of NYU Steinhardt, I’m drawn to reflect on our legacy as the United States’s first graduate school of pedagogy. We’ve vastly expanded our areas of expertise since 1890—thanks to scholars in health, the arts, media, human development, and more—and the innovative, education-focused spirit which sparked our founding still fuels our School.
In the face of unprecedented challenges, our faculty, staff, and researchers continue to inspire me with their resilience and solution-oriented thinking. The stories below reflect just a sample of their myriad efforts to carry forward our legacy of transforming education, no matter the circumstances.

New Dual-Degree Program from NYU and the London School of Economics
|
The London School of Economics and Policy and Steinhardt's Department of Media, Culture, and Communication announced a new dual-degree program, where students will study in both London and New York City and receive master's degrees from both institutions.

| Making Mentors Pairs Autistic Students for Mutual Benefit |
The Making Mentors program at Steinhardt, which began as a pilot within Steinhardt’s Nest Support Project and is supported by a $1.29 million grant from the National Science Foundation, pairs autistic college students with autistic high school students to provide mentorship and support for navigating the educational journey.

Teaching and Learning Supports Literacy Educators |
Spearheaded by Carolyn Strom, clinical assistant professor of early childhood literacy, two efforts in Steinhardt’s Department of Teaching and Learning offer emerging teachers support: Literacy Alumni & Friends, which meets for literacy-related conversations; and three new NYC school partnerships that help student teachers meet the needs of dyslexic learners.

| Research Alliance Hosts Panel on Holistic Student Support |
The Research Alliance for New York City Schools at Steinhardt hosted an event to discuss the factors that shape students’ educational trajectories. Representatives from NYC Public Schools—including Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos—CUNY CARES, the Robin Hood Foundation, New Visions for Public Schools, and more highlighted collaborative ways to increase students’ success.

Stephen Sondheim’s musical adaptation, considered one of the first modern American operas, sets the tale of a wronged barber on an unforgettable score. The Steinhardt Vocal Performance program brings to life a story of loss, love, revenge, and dark humor—laying bare the complexities of the human condition.

The International Association of Top Professionals selected Joan A. Gillman (MA ’82, Childhood Education) as the 2025 Top Educator of the Year. Gillman has taught elementary and middle school students in a range of subjects in the New York and New Jersey area throughout her 43 years as an educator. Currently, she teaches science at The Browning School on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, where she also runs the Green Team, an environmental conservation group for students.

The School Administrators Association of New York State selected Pierre Orbe (MAT ’04, Science Education) as the 2025 New York State High School Principal of the Year. A first-generation American born to Ecuadorian parents, Orbe has been principal at the DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx since 2017, during which time the school’s graduation rate rose from 46 percent to 97 percent in 2023, with more than 90 percent of students earning college credits.
