FRIENDS IN GLOBAL HEALTH Sangariveira Secondary School: A DREAMS-Friendly SchoolLocated in the outskirts of Quelimane, Zambézia Province, Sangariveira Secondary School (SSS), established in 2012, has a gloomy past. It was infamous for high levels of drug use, early and uwnanted pregnancies, prostitution, and illness. In an attempt to change this scenario, the school was selected to become a recipient of DREAMS services.
The DREAMS (Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe) Initiative focuses on reducing HIV/AIDS in adolescent girls and young women in 10 countries. The initiative also addresses factors that increase HIV vulnerability such as gender-based violence and economic disadvantage. This work is important in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal to end AIDS by 2030. Thanks to the DREAMS Initiative, the school has an operational School Health Corner (SHC) with one full-time Maternal and Child Health Nurse (MCHN), one part-time Gynecologist and a part-time Psychologist. The SHC provides many services, including HIV testing and counseling and Gender Based Violence (GBV) prevention and care. Friends in the Global Health leads the School Health Corner. This investment is already producing valuable results. Overall, due to DREAMS success at SSS, and other schools, there is a "domino effect" as other schools are now requesting the establishment of DREAMS activities in their schools.
