From Teaching Guinea Pigs to Students, an Interview With Nan Arthur

Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) faculty member Nan Arthur will lead the upcoming KPA Dog Trainer Professional (DTP) program in San Diego, CA (application deadline March 12, 2021). We sat down with Nan to talk about highlights from her own training career!

Q: Tell us about the first animal you trained.

A: I have always had animals around and many were “trained” via life happening! I remember the moment I realized that my guinea pigs would begin to squeal when I walked into a room with food. I paired that action with a cue of “reek” (very high-pitched and cartoon-like), and before long I could give the cue and they would squeal from a distance.

Oral health care is very important for pets; a daily tooth-brushing should be part of the schedule! Yet, brushing your dog's teeth can be stressful for your dog (and for you, too!). More complicated dental care can be even more challenging and more expensive and riskier.
