Excellence Recognized at Volunteer of the Year Event

In honor of National Volunteer Month, the Volunteer Center held it’s Volunteer of the Year event Thursday, April 20, at Temple Beth El in Harrisburg. Twenty-four individuals and seven groups nominated by area agencies were recognized during this annual celebration of volunteerism.

Carol Koppenhaver of Enola received the Adult Volunteer of the Year Award for her work with Caitlin’s Smiles. She volunteers each week and logged more than 900 hours in 2016. Some of the projects include making craft bags and delivering them to several hospitals, coordinating and making gift baskets for a silent auction, and helping to organize and run an annual fundraiser.

The Youth Volunteer of the Year Award went to Brandon Yorth of Millerstown. A full-time student at Carson Long Military Academy, he logged 98 hours of volunteer service during the 2015-2016 school year. Some of his many projects included performing with the academy’s glee club and drill team, serving as a military policeman for campus events, and shoveling snow for elderly campus residents. He also volunteers with his church and the Perry County Chamber of Commerce Food Truck Festival.

Local Students Make a Difference Through Youth Day of Caring

On Monday, April 3, more than 200 high school students volunteered for United Way of the Capital Region’s 15th Annual Youth Day of Caring.

The students worked with 50 adult volunteers from United Way’s Bridges Society to complete a full-scale clean-up of Harrisburg’s City Island. The Bridges Society connects a diverse group of emerging leaders through giving and volunteering.

Volunteers were able to tackle projects that would otherwise have taken weeks for the city’s small park maintenance staff to complete. Weeds and overgrown brush were cleared, playground structures and fence posts were sealed and painted, and walkways and fencing were power washed. Additionally, the students did a clean-up along Front Street and the Sunken Gardens. Thanks to the day’s cleanup, the park is now ready for people from our entire community to enjoy.

Juniors and seniors from the following 10 high schools participated: Camp Hill, Central Dauphin East, Commonwealth Charter Academy, Cumberland Valley, John Harris, Lower Dauphin, Middletown, Red Land, SciTech and Susquehanna Township.

Youth Day of Caring was sponsored by Members 1st Federal Credit Union (Lead Sponsor), Capital Blue (Lunch Sponsor), Harrisburg Kiwanis Youth Foundation (Tool Sponsor) and PSECU (Sponsor).
