Lorence and Mangan Attract NSF Grant |
Congratulations to Dr. Argelia Lorence (left), professor of metabolic engineering, and Dr. Scott Mangan (right), associate professor of ecology, who are PI and co-PI, respectively, for a $2.2 million grant awarded through the EPSCoR program of the National Science Foundation. Working in cooperation with university researchers from Kansas, Kansas State and Nebraska, they are seeking to improve drought tolerance in rice and wheat, two of the world’s most important food crops. | Rawal is Guest Editor for Special Journal |
Dr. Gaurav Rawal, assistant professor of virology, Veterinary Medicine, is guest editor of a forthcoming special issue of Microorganisms, titled “Porcine Viral Diseases Diagnosis, Epidemiology and Control.” The issue will highlight current research on porcine viral diseases, with a focus on diagnosis, epidemiology, surveillance, pathogenesis and disease control. The issue aims to bring together researchers working on important viral diseases affecting swine health and production.

Yanowitz is Co-Author on Student Behaviors |
Dr. Karen Yanowitz, professor of psychology, presented research at the International Association for Relationship Research biannual conference, held in Glasgow, Scotland. She co-authored the paper with two undergraduate students, Kaylon Jones and Paige Cox. They examined at what point, during romantic relationship initiation, college students recognize problematic behaviors, and what motivations they attributed to individuals who engage in these behaviors. Jones and Cox have subsequently graduated.

| Daroonparvar Explores Coatings for RHEAs
|
Dr. Mohammadreza Daroonparvar, assistant professor of materials engineering, is corresponding author for an article published in the International Journal of Refractory Metals and Hard Materials. The article explores the use of protective coatings to improve the high-temperature oxidation resistance of refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs). His work highlights how pack cementation/slurry-based diffusion coatings can promote the formation of protective oxide scales that act as diffusion barriers at elevated temperatures.

Brown Comments on Current Issues |
Dr. Angelo Brown, assistant professor of criminology, recently provided analysis on current issues related to his field of study. The online publication Inc. used his comments in an article on the City of New Orleans’ use of artificial intelligence to field 9-1-1 calls. KXTV in Sacramento interviewed Brown about public sentiment regarding law enforcement’s use of Flock cameras. Newsweek used Brown's comments about the Tupac Shakur murder trial conviction, and he was quoted in a CNET article on “free phone” delivery scams.
