Keeping Us Posted

This shoutout was recently posted on Instagram by one of our patient families:
"The littlest KnotHead spent the morning at @vumcchildren for a procedure (she’s fine, no worries) and we had to share the awesomeness of washable markers on old sheets. This is her second trip to the surgery center there, and every time it’s like a play date. We definitely appreciate all the staff- especially the nurses and child life specialists. After she woke up she said she wanted to stay 🤣

I’m seriously on the look out for some inexpensive sheets to color on for sick days when she’s bored by needs to rest!"

Child Injury Prevention Day Photo Recap

Squid (pictured below, left) was a big help supporting National Injury Prevention Day, which we celebrated on November 18. A table was set up in the ED from 8am-8pm to give out infant home safety kits, educational materials, slap bracelets, and gun locks to families as they were leaving the ED.
A fabulous team of volunteers helped out by staffing the table and talking to families. Pictured, left to right: Dr. Holly Hanson (Emergency), Ashley Nicholson (Poison Control), Amber Sexton (Injury Prevention), Lipika Narisetti (Injury Prevention Intern), Emily Roberts (Injury Prevention), Dr. Kelsey Gastineau (Hospitalist), and Stacey Pecenka (Injury Prevention).
Ashley Nicholson, Poison Control Coordinator, and Stacey Pacenka, Program Manager, visited Seacrest Studios. Each read a book about helmet safety and home safety and talked a little about what National Injury Prevention Day is. Ashley is seen below, right showing off a snake and explaining how to identify whether it’s venomous.

FINANCE & GROWTH
Supply Cost Reduction Program
Supply Cost Reduction work will continue in FY2023.
EPSi Cost Accounting Team has developed a Supply Cost Tableau dashboard to measure and track performance to expense goal and change in year over year costs .
The Supply Cost workgroup team was created to oversee this workstream consisting of Finance, Perioperative Services, and Surgeon Leadership.
The team has identified 3 areas with opportunity for improvement:
1) Surgeon Preference Card Review
2) Reduce Supply Wastage
3) Utilization of CPT codes with greatest opportunity
If interested in going through a review of your Service’s Supply Cost data and performance on the dashboard, please contact Dr. John Pope or Jeremy Willis.

INNOVATION

New technology in the Pediatric Endoscopy Lab

Pediatric Endoscopy Lab will add a new technology early next year that will assist in the evaluation and treatment of patients that are seen in several programs here at Monroe Carell.  These programs include the Gastrointestinal Motility, Eosinophilic Disorders, and Aerodigestive Programs.  EndoFLIP (endoluminal functional lumen imaging probe) is a newer, minimally invasive type of technology that can be used during endoscopy to measure the dimensions, movement, and pressure inside the esophagus and other organs. The ratio of these measurements is called distensibility, or the ability to stretch under pressure. It also allows an assessment of the motility of the esophagus while the patient is under anesthesia.  EndoFLIP may be used during endoscopy and can help physicians to better evaluate and detect motility problems including esophageal achalasia, swallowing difficulties, and eosinophilic esophagitis. It can also assess esophageal diameter, effectiveness of certain treatments, and continued symptoms after fundoplication. The advantage of the EndoFLIP is that it is performed when the patient is under anesthesia for an endoscopic procedure. It involves placing a small balloon catheter through the child’s mouth and into their stomach. It works by inflating the balloon to assess the function of the esophagus.

New procedure to minimize GI bleeding

Pediatric Endoscopy Lab has also added Argon Plasma Coagulation technology, also known as APC, to our treatment modalities for gastrointestinal bleeding.  Argon plasma coagulation (APC), sometimes referred to as argon photocoagulation, is a medical procedure that uses argon gas during a colonoscopy or an upper endoscopy to control bleeding from certain lesions in the gastrointestinal tract. The Erbe System combines electrosurgery with hydrosurgery in a single instrument.

OR Renovation Construction To Begin  February 3, 2023
10 of our existing operating rooms have been designed and approved for renovation! Each room has been evaluated and priortized based on the current state of the infrastructure, including HVAC, electrical, IT, and equipment/technology needs. The OR Renovations Committee has been working hard behind the scenes to plan for case flow changes as operating rooms close for work.
John Pope, MD, Perioperative Surgical Director of Business Operations is working with the Surgical Chiefs and surgery schedulers to identify cases eligible to go to our offsite pediatric surgery facilities. Please direct any questions around block time and room closures to your service chief.
