April 2023

From the Dean

We are approaching the end of the academic year, traditionally a time when we honor both our accomplishments and the outstanding staff, students and faculty instrumental in our success. The College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences has had an exceptional year. As this issue highlights, we are recognized for our dedication to cutting-edge research that addresses the critical issues of today as well as for our efforts in creating the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.

Our College’s commitment to the future of transportation and the nation’s cybersecurity was highlighted recently by visits from two top transportation officials, the U.S. Department of Transportation Chief Scientist and the South Carolina Department of Transportation Secretary. Both recognized Clemson’s role as the home of a new national University Transportation Center that will support our multidisciplinary research and field studies focused on developing tools and techniques to protect this critical system from cyberattacks.

This issue also features our award-winning students, alumni and faculty. Two of the four Clemson students awarded 2023 Goldwater Scholarships come from our College. This award, the most prestigious and competitive in engineering, mathematics and natural sciences, is a testament to their academic achievements, research experience and potential to have an impact in their fields.

In addition, two of our alumni are recent recipients of Distinguished Service Awards and two received Roaring10 Awards; both of these awards, which recognize professional achievements and dedication to service as well as other Clemson core values, highlight the significant contributions our graduates make to their fields and to their communities and beyond. Finally, one of our faculty members has accepted a prestigious national leadership position, one that will increase our College’s profile and provide increased opportunities for interdisciplinary research and collaboration.

This month’s eighth annual Give Day was a success, and we appreciate those of you who supported the University and especially the college. The achievements and initiatives that we highlight in each issue of this newsletter are only possible because of your support. Your contributions help us attract the best and brightest students and provide them with a world-class education and research opportunities. If you would like to make a donation to help us in this endeavor, you can click on the “Make a Gift” button below. As always, we are grateful for your generosity and continuing commitment to our college.

Sincerely,

Anand K. Gramopadhye, Dean
