Wander Your Watershed

22 Years Of Walking:
John Francis

John Francis set an extraordinary example of environmental advocacy through no other means than walking and not talking. In 1971, John witnessed the Standard Oil spill in the San Francisco Bay. The devastation that he observed was immediate, and it moved him to give up all motorized transportation for 22 years. As he walked for the environment, he found himself arguing with others about his intent, so he made a vow of silence. Originally, it was not meant to last longer than a day, but as he connected with the value of listening, he maintained his vow for 17 years.
