Five students became the first graduates of the Zucker Family Graduate Education Center in May. Galen Helfter earned a master’s in digital production arts. Garrett McKay, Jason Franz, Charles Fricks, and Pedro Luna received master’s degrees in mechanical engineering. The center is part of Clemson University’s Restoration Institute innovation campus in North Charleston.

Clemson University cybersecurity research to be highlighted at top-tier security conference
Cybersecurity researchers from around the world will hear about two separate Clemson University research projects at the 25th ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security, also known as ACM CCS. Wenbo Ding and Hongda Li, Ph.D. students studying under Hongxin Hu, will present their findings next month.

Clemson University Ph.D. student Byron Lowens is among 200 young researchers from around the world selected to participate in this year’s Heidelberg Laureate Forum in Heidelberg, Germany. He is pursuing a doctorate in human-centered computing under the guidance of Kelly Caine, associate professor in the School of Computing.

Video shows $1-million upgrade to Palmetto Cluster supercomputer
Clemson University’s acclaimed supercomputer, the Palmetto Cluster, recently received a $1-million upgrade. The upgrade is helping researchers quicken the pace of scientific discovery and technological innovation in a broad range of fields, from developing new medicines to creating advanced materials. A grant from the National Science Foundation funded the upgrade. Amy Apon was the principal investigator. You can watch a video of the hardware being installed.

Sloan Nietert receives prestigious Fulbright award
Nietert, of Mount Pleasant, a mathematical sciences and computer science double major, has been selected for a Fulbright Award, a program that aims to increase understanding between citizens of the United States and citizens of other countries. Nietert will spend the next nine months in Hungary conducting research at the Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics.

National Scholars’ roar will echo far and wide with 100 percent placement post-graduation
Grace Glenn, a computer science major from Mount Pleasant, is one of 12 students who make up this year’s National Scholars graduating class. From Clemson to Cleveland some are pursuing secondary degrees while others dive into the workforce. Glenn is beginning her career as a Machine Learning Engineer at Squarespace. Clemson’s National Scholars Program is merit-based, encompassing a diverse group of students who share a curiosity and passion for learning.
