S.T.E.A.M. Challenge '19
70 students tackle natural disaster-themed projects
Airplanes, rockets, engineering, the environment, nature, shelter and art were part of the mix in the natural disaster-themed S.T.E.A.M. Challenge 2019 academic exhibition.
Seventy students from 10 out-of-school time programs in Newaygo, Oceana and Muskegon counties took part in the sixth annual event, with more than 100 people in attendance at Hesperia Middle School and Hesperia High School on January 26. The first- through eighth-graders were from Engage! in Hesperia; REACH in White Cloud; and Project FOCUS in Hart, Muskegon, Muskegon Heights and Walkerville.
S.T.E.A.M. is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math; REACH stands for for Respect, Excellence, Academics, Community and Health; and FOCUS means For Our Children’s Ultimate Success.
The programs, a community service of TrueNorth, are funded through Fremont Area Community Foundation grants for Engage! and REACH and with federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants for Project FOCUS.
